Default Looking To Buy Tennis Racquet

Roger Federer has inspired me to play tennis (I have not played in at least 20 years). What should I expect to pay for a decent racquet? Any recommendations? Mid-range.

Yikes, these cost more than I expected:

If you're just gonna play occasionally, you can find a decent one for 30-40 bucks.......I break my raquets really easily, I went thru 5 last year(I have rage issues), so I have to buy the cheap ones.....

My wife and I did this last year and bought some Wilson mid range racquet. They were on sale for something in the neighborhood of like $40. More than good enough for the casual player. The technology of these things these days even on the low end ones is so different from the old crap ones. Huge sweet spots and so light yet strong. I hadn't played for a long time either and it was like a new game. You can return virtually anything that comes across the net. Unlike the old days where you had to have it hit right in the middle of the tiny sweet spot.

I went with Wilson because they are a very established well known brand and offer a lot of different choices.

If you've never played before, just go to a sports store (Sport-Check works) and pick one up for under $50. Go for one that has a larger head (no jokes please), since it will be more forgiving.

Think of it like a hockey stick - you're wasting your time on $200+ products if you don't know how to play yet.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I need a $200 racquet.

Plus the bigger ones make a much more satisfying thudding noise when you throw them at your opponent.

Babolat and Head racquets will cost you the most. If you can get a low end Head or Wilson for $30-$60 it should be good for a beginner.

I also find Tennis racquets are often on sale, so look for a deal. Sport check will often have $150-$200 racquets marked down to under $100.

I whip tennis balls at my opponent.....my racquet takes a beating when I throw it in the air, over the fence, Braveheart style........My racquet also has battles with the garbage can on a regular basis.

Make sure you get them restrung though. Pre strung racquets really suck.

Alright troutman. I'll play you a set for my next real estate fees.

Not fair - you will have to spot me a few games. Ask my team-mates who have seen me hit a softball.

Before spending too much money on something your not too sure you'll stick with... Buy something very reasonable... Like this;

This threads works as good as a new one, I've meaning meaning to ask if anyone is a member at the Calgary Tennis Club? Similar to trout I haven't played for a few years but want to get out on the court again. I was thinking the CTC might be good but don't know anyone who plays there.

And Trout, if you're looking for someone to hit some tennis balls with, I'd be game.
