Default "Official" 2009-2010 Bundesliga Thread

Does anyone else here, besides Locke, follow the German Bundesliga? The season starts today, with current titleholders Wolfsburg hosting Stuttgart.

If you are curious, there is a good English language website put out by the league (LINK: http://www.bundesliga.de/en/index.php) and selected games are televised on Gol TV Canada. (LINK: http://www.goltv.ca/schedule/)

For those who have yet to follow a particular team, I invite you to support Hamburg SV. Nur der HSV! (Only Hamburg!)

Mmmmmm.....Hamburger......

I have a black Bayern Munich jersey that I bought in Munich, but I've always been somewhat partial to Schalke.

I tend to watch the Bundesliga fairly impartially or to cheer for particular players that I like, Hamburg will definitely get some attention from me this season though, I think their mascot should be the Hamburgler....

What I'm excited to see is Wolfsburg in the Champion's League, they've got a pretty impressive team, no huge stars but they play well together.

My nephews live in Cologne. Go Billy Goats!

1. FC Köln go into the new season with some major personnel changes. One - the return of Lukas Podolski - had been eagerly anticipated by the fans for months. Others, first and foremost with regard to the coach, came out of the blue.

I am happy to point out that Bayern has gotten off to a miserable start: 2 points out of a possible 9, losing today to newly promoted Mainz!

They never had a choice, Chelsea would have just kept throwing money at them until it happened, Real Madrid stylezz.

They're about to do the same thing to Franck Ribery.

The German clubs dont make the same cake the English clubs do, believe it or not, Bayern Munich is one of the most profitable clubs in the world from developing talent, selling it at a premium, and then developing new talent. Only recently have they been resorting to purchasing top tier talent. If Luca Toni counts as top tier talent that is....

Why is this? I have heard that the Bundesliga has the highest attendance numbers of all the European league. Germany's population is also higher than the UK (82 million vs. 61 million, numbers provided by wikipedia), so how does this happen?

By the way, Hamburg is in first place right now!

TV money. Just like the NFL, the owners aren't making the big money off ticket sales. The team that finishes dead last in the Premiership are guaranteed 42 million British pounds this season from the TV rights. By contrast, the winners of the Bundesliga will receive less than 5 million pounds sterling.

The big money is in the Champions League group stages and beyond and in the English Premiership.

English clubs must be careful - the Italian league collapsed under its own weight back in the early/mid nineties because of high wage bills and decreasing TV revenue.

Thought I would share some Bundesliga highlights from this past weekend, where Hertha Berlin's goalkeeper decided to see your "Nikolai Khabibulin" gift goal, and raise you an "Arturs Irbe" and "Hardy Aastrom"!

My apologies that the video link is in Russian. Hamburg SV is in red, while HSC Berlin is in the white and blue. The comedy starts at the 0:25 mark and continues through to the end!

Even though it appears that no one on CP cares about the German Bundesliga, I can't help myself to mention that Hamburg SV, possibly the greatest football team in the world, won 4-0 on the road against Nurnberg, which is "Nuremburg" for all you anglophiles.

That is all.

Anyone remember Soccer Made In Germany on PBS in the 1970s?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soccer_Made_in_Germany

Soccer Made in Germany was a PBS show that ran from 1976 until 1988. The program, distributed to PBS member stations by Oregon Public Broadcasting, featured hour long edited highlights of games involving West Germanassociation football teams. The show was hosted by Toby Charles from 1976-1983, and by Alan Fountain from 1984-1988.

Hamburg, despite being down to 10 men before the half, pull out a huge 2-1 win over over their hated rivals Werder Bremen today!

NUR DER HSV!
