So I've been robbed (Old Thread - Motorbike possibly found)
Looks like I'll start dealing with my insurance company on Monday, just had my motorbike stolen.
How do I find out what the "Blue Book" value of my bike is?
Any advice on how to negotiate when it's time to settle?
I am beyond furious.

Yeah, of course. Called the police and my insurance company minutes after discovering it was gone. That was an hour ago and I am still in a rage.

I've never really had anything as big as a motorbike stolen.. but I have had my stereo system jacked from my car. I hurts man, I really hope you get value for your bike. I don't know how much it would be worth to you to look up the value of your bike though, the insurance company is going to come up with their own price regardless, I don't think there is much negotiating involved.. at least thats the experience I've had.

Thanks Ken, I had no idea there was a site with all the info available. I thought I would have to call a dealer or wait until speaking to my insurance company.
The blue book value sure is low, pretty much half of what I paid for the bike. Then there's the the deductable. If I get paid out and buy the same exact bike, I'll be out $2500.
I just wish I could find the person.

Sounds like you know your numbers. My best suggestion is get as much info as you can to the replacement value. Spend $20 on buying bike magazines and Buy&Sell's, even ones from other cities. The insurance company will have a value in mind; make sure you show them what the big is truely worth. You still are their customer; be firm but calm with the adjuster.

I believe you don't have to worry about the replacement value for now anyways. Don't insurance companies pay out a minimum of 30 days after the theft just in case it shows up?

Just had to look out the window to make sure my baby is still there. OK, I had much the same situation. I found as many pictures of my bike I could to show it off and found similar bikes in the want adds. My bike was used and I spent about $6,000 for it two years previous. I think I got $6000 in the settlement. Include any upgrades you've done and any bills you may have. Terrible thing to have happen, but good luck with the insurance and start thinking about a replacement. That's always fun and prices are better come winter.
Those blue book prices seem very low, maybe American numbers. They should have to use the Calgary market but I've found the prices here in BC to be higher than Calgary, so use whatever is best.

Is it unique? Any chance it will be recovered?

I have zero faith in the police, unless they stumble upon a garage full of stolen goods like they do maybe once a year. It's gone and there is nothing I can do. I just installed new handlebars, and had a lot of aftermarket parts on the bike, it was just how I wanted it.
I've only found one ad on autotrader.com, I'm going to keep searching the buy and sell along with print ads, and buy some autotrader mags, great idea. Thanks guys.

Not that it matters now with your current situation, and it may not anyway depending on how old the bike was, but for next time I will give you some advice.
Everyone should be aware of SEF 43R, and make sure you ask to purchase it from your insurance company when you buy a new vehicle. It's a limited waiver of depreciation that covers you up to 24 months after the date of purchase. If you write it off or it's stolen or what have you, you get back what you paid for it. It only costs about $25-30 and is definitely worth it.

My truck was stolen from the hospital. I called the cops, made a report.
I went to all the crappy neighbourhoods looking for it. After about a month, I gave up and got a car.
Get a call about 1 week later, its the impound lot.
"Yes Sir, are you going to be picking up your truck from our lot anytime soon?"
.. "Why my truck had been stolen over a month ago"...
"No, its been sitting here for 2 weeks, and you owe us $295 for the fee".
hahah... i snapped.
The girl there was nice, and she only charged for the impound fee ($50 i think).
Cops never called me.
Fixed the steering column and sold it.
Moral of the story, try calling around to some lots, they might just have it.
Check ebay too... you never know.
Mine ended up in Deer Run for what its worth.

Knock on doors and ask your neighbors if they've seen anything or had anything of theirs stolen around the same time.

Old thread, giving it a bump due to a recent development. Got a call this morning from the police, someone tried to register a motorbike with the serial number from my stolen Yamaha.
The police are calling Jevco Insurance in Montreal, have to wait untill he gets back to me with more info.
I bought the bike for $7800, If I remember correctly got paid out $3,999.
The blue book value is now $2245, might be worthwhile to buy it back, I'm dreaming that it's just been sitting in a garage for the past 2 1/2 years and still still in good shape with the Renthal bars, bark busters, skid plate, rad guards and frame guards I installed.
Has anyone ever bought back a vehicle was paid off by the insurance company? Did you get to test drive it first?

If the police catch the guy, ask them if they recovered any extension cords and let me know.
Thanks

That's an interesting development, three years later!
Some poor probably bought it for cash from some sketchy guy and didn't do a lien check on it.
Is buying it back from the insurance company even an option? Would they offer you that courtesy if you want it, or would they just put it on the open market?
Hopefully, if getting it back is an option, that the condition is good. Maybe it was collecting dust for 3 years.
Good luck! Keep us posted!

I was actually down at my insurance agent's this morning to renew my street bike and asked, he said I do get first crack if I want to buy it back.

Yeah I was going to mention this. Not only were you screwed over originally, but now some poor person is probably getting screwed on the other end having bought the bike not knowing it was stolen. Crappy all around.
