Audi's
Underrated or overrated? I'm thinking of buying a used one and have heard mixed reviews about their models, so what is your opinion on them?

Personally I would want to buy a VW, drop it, tint it and put some wheels on it for less money than an Audi. But I like to have an original car over the "Audi" name considering VW is the same company and has the same quality. Both are expensive to fix but VW would be a bit cheaper.

I like new Audis, and old one too actually; but I've heard from many people that older ones break down a lot and cost a lot to fix. I don't think I'd buy an Audi that wasn't under warranty.

I have a 2001 A4. All I've had to repair was the timing belt and that was a preemptive replacement.
Audi used to be an amazing value, but their prices now are really high, but I'd still rather own one over a BMW.

In my opinion, in general Audi makes nicer cars than BMW. That opinion is largely based on looks though. I think Audi's look a lot better, and that the new 5, 7 and Z series are hideous (the 3 is very nice though, but I still like the A4 better). Audi interiors are also better looking and more functional imo.
I haven't heard much about their relative reliability... the two BMWs I've had have given me very conflicting feelings on the maker.
If your going to put down a decent amount on that Audi, check out the new Camaro. I saw one today in the dealer and everything about it looks great. It has the nicest interior I've ever seen in a Chevy.

???
That's like saying Infiniti has the same quality as Nissan and Lexus has the same quality as Toyota.

I say Yay. As a driving machine, nothing can touch a BMW, nothing. (Except the supercars)
I personally think the new Audi's are the best looking cars on the road today, nothing touches how good they look. There quality has gone up drastically as well, and they are climbing back against their German rivals for drivabilty.
I am not sure on the quality of old Audi's, but there German so I assume their decent.
More importantly, BMW drivers are ALL cocks. They think because they own a Beemer they are better than everyone else, they think there car is better. Audi drivers are not such dicks. That is why I say Audi > BMW.

We've had a '01 Audi Allroad, '03 A4 wagon, and '06 BMW 535 wagon.
No reliability issues with any of those cars.
These were all my wife's cars, and I was kind of pissed that my wife bought the bmw while I was out of town .
Have to say though, I much prefer the steering and handling of the bmw. Also think that every design of the detail in the bmw is better than any other car I've owned. Wasn't crazy about the bmw's interior at first, but it has grown on me quite a bit. The leather has aged really well, and am a big fan of the idrive despite the mixed reviews.
Nothing wrong with the audi's though, although I wasn't crazy about the turbo engines each of them had.

I have a BMW and a good buddy has an Audi. I like the look of his Audi better, especially the interior but when it comes to the driving experience I would pick the BMW. I think reliability is probably even between the two. Neither one of us have had any major issues.

I've always thought they had awesome wheel and rim designs. I like how they seem to be concave a bit.

Is it true that an oil change in an Audi is $150+?

This generalization annoys me. I drive a BMW, I don't feel superior, I don't drive like I own the road and I know many people who drive BMW's who don't feel they're better than anyone. Dicks don't have a car type, its a personality issue.
I got my car because its cute and it was more fun to drive than the others I test drove. Not becuase I thought driving a BMW entitled me to anything but going from point A to point B.
My BMW is the best car I've ever owned. I've had no problems with it at all, and I've never driven such a spunky car before. The interior is beautiful and everything is so easily accessible while driving. Its a great car. Oh yeah, and all my maintenance is free at the dealership.

Isn't that kind of ignoring the reason why the Audi's are more expensive? Because they have nicer interiors, better climate control, a crazy all wheel drive system, etc. Test drive a Jetta vs an A4 and you'll see a lot of the differences. And its not like VW's are that cheap anymore. A decked out Passat is easily the same price as a nicely loaded A4 unless prices have changed since the last time I've looked. Toureg's aren't cheap either. Audi's are basically luxury VW's
Its exactly like an Acura vs Honda debate.

An oil change for a Ferrari Enzo costs over $1000. New Brakes would set you back $30,000.
Back on topic, Audi's are some of the best looking cars out there.

Pretty similar. I think most people who like one type would like the other although obviously people end up harping on individual differences. I used to own two A4 1.8T's. My friends have owned a Jetta 1.8T, one friend has a 328i and another a 330i. So I've had a bit of experience driving in a few different types.
Differences I've heard or seen:
-Smoother power band on the BWM's vs the Turbo Audi's. Whether you like that or not depends a lot on what you've driven in the past probably. I liked my 1.8T engine. It accelerated at a certain rate and then when you hit higher revs the Turbo kicks in and it really goes. Can change your shifting patterns. Some people hate how the Turbo kicks in and gives you that extra juice. Personal preference
- Most Audi's come standard with Quattro all wheel drive, most BMW's aren't all wheel drive. Actually does have some bearing up in Canada as all wheel drive can really help your traction on icy streets. As long as one wheel has traction you should be able to hit the gas pedal and go in an Audi.
- Interior differences. Personally I love the Audi interior. I hate the BMW having the window controls in the centre console for example. But I'd probably get used to either pretty quick, wouldn't be a deciding factor for me.
- Perception differences. As has been mentioned in this thread, people may hate on you more or generalize about you more if you're a BMW driver. There seems to be a different perception about the two and BWM drivers do get classified as ######s by people. My friend who bought a BMW has noticed this.
- Styling. Personally I think the current Audi models look awesome, I'm not as keen on the new BMW models. If you're buying used I guess it depends which generation you go with, I really liked the BWM style a generation or two ago and have usually liked the Audi styling.
Personally I view the two companies as very similar and basically equivalent. Go test drive a few BMW's and a few Audi's and you'll probably have your own ideas on the matter. I don't think you'd go wrong with either, great engineering on both counts.

I'm biased as I learned how to drive on an older audi. I remember it was a joy to drive and stuck to road like crazy (and i pushed it being a teenager with raging hormones). My dad didn't put much money into it over the years, but still spent more on it than his Saab overall. 340K on it when we finally retired it. Our friends say that if you get a newer one, make sure its German built and not Mexican--I don'tknow enough to tell you which is which though.
