Default Yankee Stadium: Save Gate 2.

The New York Yankees. Love them or hate them (I'm assuming the majority here would hate them), you can not deny what their former ball park has meant to the game. Even Red Sox fans can get nostalgic for a venue like the Original Yankee Stadium or even Renovated Yankee Stadium. With the New Yankee Stadium being the current home of the New York Yankees the renovated, or former, Yankee Stadium is scheduled for demolition taking with it all the history of its glorious past. A group of concerned fans have come up with a solution to save part of the original Yankee Stadium and incorporate it into the proposed park that will be built on the former ball park's site.

Here is the website for the Save Gate 2 proposal.

Its sad that these old ball parks get the wrecking ball without saving any part of the structure. We can read stories about Ebbets Field or the Polo Grounds. Yet we can not see or touch any part of those legendary structures. As the article states, a part of League Field in Cleveland and Forbes Field in Pittsburgh were left standing. Why can't a piece of the most legendary ball park of them all be left standing?

Unfortunately I don't think this group has enough time to save Gate 2. I have read that they are already drilling holes in it to prepare it for demolition, which is probably a few months away.

A cool bit of info - the old ballpark of the Minnesota Twins, Metropolitan Stadium, is where the Mall of America currently stands. In the mall, they still have home plate where it was and they also have the furthest outfield bleacher seat.

This is what is left of the Polo Grounds. The stairway from Coogan"s Bluff to the home plate entrance.

I love old ball parks, but Yankee stadium didn't do much for me. Maybe the renovations cost it a lot of its character, but the stadium and experience was pretty bland, IMO.

Fenway, on the other hand, is an amazing place to see and experience a game. Even if you are staring at a post or the people who always seem to be in the way.

Part of the reason Gate 2 has been choosen is that it is part of the original Yankee Stadium built in 1923.

I plan on hitting a few games at Fenway next season.

It looks 200ft down the lines. Little league distance. But could you imagine playing center field there? Like slow pitch on a fenceless diamond except with major leaguers hitting instead of fat middle aged guys with bad knees.

The bullpen was in fair territory (the only park to do so I believe). You can see the bullpen bench with the roof over it at the outfield wall in this photo.

Speaking of playing center field at the Polo Grounds.

483 feet to center!!! wow. That's 75 more feet than Yankee Stadium.

There's a few video games where you can play in that park (and other classic parks such as Ebbets Field). It's a lot of fun for sure.

It almost makes more sense given the distances to play with two centre fielders (deep and shallow) and then a right or left fielder depending on which way the batter hits. I wonder how teams did it back in the day.

In anything that I have read, people are unsure where exactly the 483ft mark is. Is it to the monument directly below the 483ft sign? Is it to the edge of the overhang of the clubhouse? Is it to the wall along the ground beneath the clubhouse? Not that it really mattered. Nobody every hit it that far anyway. In fact I don't think there were any ground rules for that part of the stadium for a home run.

In the picture of "The Catch" that I posted of Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series. The ball was crushed approximately 440 ft by Vic Wertz of the Cleveland Indians. In that picture it doesn't look like 43 ft from where Mays caught the ball near the wall to the club house. Although pictures can be deceiving.

LOL I remember being stunned at seeing these when I saw a game at Tiger Stadium in 1999...
