Fire in the NE- Airport? (Update-now it's out)
Looking out the window I see a huge plume of black smoke coming from the NE- like maybe at the Airport. Is anybody close enough to see what is going on? Maybe firefighter training, or is it something worse?

I'd guess firefighter training...they usually do it once a month...and its quite noticeable all across the city. Atleast from my old job dispatching them that's what it usually was.

Just saw a plane take off, so I hope that's a good sign.

The southbound lanes of the QE2 Highway are currently closed at Highway 566, right at the Balzac overpass. A large truck with a crane hit the overpass, causing some damage to the bridge.
Traffic is not being allowed across the overpass while crews inspect the bridge.
Southbound traffic is currently being re-routed onto westbound Highway 566.

I just saw on the news that southbound (I think?) QE2 at HW566 is closed because a truck with a crane on it hit the underside of the overpass and totally tore it apart, there are pieces on the bridge falling off visibly in the camera shots.
No smoke though.
EDIT: On the news just now they had traffic on top of the 566 bridge and said it was still open because the main steel cables are still intact.
Claeren.

Thats classic, some honkey tonk truck driver destroys more public proeprty because he/she is too stupid to understand the heights of overpasses.

That smoke was from the training area at the airport that the firefighters there use. I believe they have an old F-28 there, and I've seen an old 737-200 parked in that spot with it.

Why the QEII was shut down earlier. I believe it has just been reopened, but don't take my word for it.

When I was going to school at SAITs airport campus, we could see the fire training area really well, got to see a fire one day, pretty cool sight.

Cool pic - I just got back into town from north of here, and it's definitely re-opened. There's a big ol' gash on the bridge though.

Yeah. sounds like a truck carrying a crane with its boom still up made contact with the bridge. Took me forever to get to it! By midday, it was backed up to Airdrie.
