Default Domain purchasing Questions

Hello.

I should know this being in the tech biz and all but here goes.

My dad and uncle are both retired and looking to setup a consulting biz together. They want a unique domain name for email addresses and a possible future website.

I have purchased a few domain names, mostly for hopeful future sale but I have never setup a website or associated anythign more than email forwarder etc.

What I am wondering is this, does a site like Go Daddy host/administer email as well with a pop/smtp server.

Example, if I purchase 123consulting.com, can I pay them to host/admin the email services with that. Like Bob@123consulting.com etc.

I can easily setup a mailserver myself, but they arent looking for huge upfront costs and I figured if a site like godaddy or whatever would do this, than this would save them upfront costs as well as the hassle that me setting up an email server for them would accomany (considering they would expect it to be done for free most likely).

Thanks.

Heh. Google should really advertise their services.

Regarding the OP...I know Ipower does that. If you purchase a domain from them, you can buy 200 email addresses for something like $15/year. Dirt cheap.

Here is the link.

Does ipower actually host the email side.

Go Daddy offers something similar but its for email forwarding.

....

They both have gmail accounts. They want something more legit than gmail.com - I didnt know about the google stuff - will have to check it out.

Yeah you can host 123consulting.com on Google, that would work well.

You can also get a hosting package at something like Dreamhost and host the email there, they have pop and imap and a nice interface to administrate it all. You can host the website there too.

I usually use a separate company for domain registration and any hosting; some companies have difficulties moving a domain name away from them if you cancel the hosting.

Use photon's advice. The Gmail interface via Dreamhost hosting is worth the money for sure. Far better than Squirrel mail or what ever else GoDaddy is using.

I'd also say hit up http://www.domainsatcost.ca for registering the domain. They are a great canadian company that's cheap (12.00 for .ca domains and 14.95 for .com domains) Just make sure you only chose the register package and not the full hosting package.

I believe they do.

But, I would go with Google if you can. As usual, they'll probably have better service, and better everything.

i agree with the gmail opinion. i have hosted through godaddy for several years and used their free email service, and finally switched my domain over to the gmail service last year. the free imap integration was too much to turn down. you get all the features of gmail with the prestige of your own domain address.

Alright, I am a n00b when it comes to this.

I registered a domain with domains at cost - check.

Google apps requires a Cname change to be made for verification.

So I assume i have to host this domain with another company, and then from there I can change the Cname?

Thanks, sorry for the n00b questions.

I use Go Daddy to host my site and have a couple of free email addresses with it. Cost is under $5 a month US. Really not a bad deal at all.

Yup, though check with the host to make sure you can do it, some hosts don't let you do anything with the DNS.

Or you can manage your own DNS with something like zoneedit.
