Default The 08/09 Liverpool F.C. Thread

I figured I'd start this with the current EPL season underway and knowing that there are a few die-hard scousers fans around here. I've managed to watch both League matches so far and, suffice it to say, they havent been convincing, but they cant be beat for late-game theatrics.

It would be nice for the Reds fans around here to have a place to discuss the season and the upcoming Champions League games. I know I wont be able to watch them all, so it'll also help keep me updated.

As for my thoughts about today's game against Middlesborough:

They totally didnt deserve this win, borough played their hearts out, despite the fact that the ref made some clearly crazy decisions, most notably against some of the fouls by Huth. That is a defender with some wires loose and he got extremely lucky.

At the same time, the delayed call on the foul against Gerrard late on when Kuyt was in a great position was baffling to say the least. It was unfortunate that he couldnt convert that, but damn did he come close.

Carragher was very fortunate on his goal and once again the Reds are dragged out of the fire by Captain Incredible Steven Gerrard. You cant say enough about this guy, he was simply fantastic out there again.

He is the English Jarome Iginla.

At the same time, I was watching England's friendly against the Czechs a couple days ago, where they were extremely fortunate to come away with a late draw, just an awful game for them, but Gerrard was the man, he was everywhere in that match making everything happen, easily the best player on the pitch, but nobody else could help him at all.

Why wasnt he even considered for England's Captaincy?

Throw your thoughts in here regarding EPL, CL and Gerrard's performances for England.

Sunderland fan here. Didn't actually see the 0-1 loss to the 'Pool last weekend but by all accounts it was an equal game which was decided by Torres' individual skill... today was not much different except it was Stevie Gerrard(although I was thanking god you guys pulled it off against goddamn Boro).. anyways it's looking like another season where Liverpool are stuck well behind the top 3 and ahead of #5. Hope they turn er around though.
Anyways being a Liverpool fan just wonderin what you think of Diouf and Cisse? Probbly dont have the best opinion of em but they've done pretty good in their short time at SAFC so far.

They just dont seem to be clicking, I dont know what it is, but its not happening yet. I fully expect them to improve as the season wears on, and I'm hoping for some good European success.

I wont comment on Cisse and Diouf.

More or less, but I'd like to keep it to mostly LFC related discussion. I really dont want to hear from the Chelsea, Arsenal and Man U crowd, you cant escape these people.

A bonus though, Arsenal loses to Fulham, well done Hammers.

I figured I'd post the match and fixture list here to help keep track of the games.

I'm with you, Locke. Good idea. Sorry, I've been away for a few days. Scousers stick together. There's an old saying and one that's is certainly true to yours truly: "You can take the scouser out of Liverpool but you'll never take Liverpool out of the scouser."

Anyway, I haven't seen any of the matches yet. (It's cabin season still so that mean no TV). I read that they have been disjointed through the first three, official, games of the season. However, you cannot argue with the results. A draw away in Europe is useful, even if they were extremely lucky. Two wins to start the season in the EPL is a great start, especially as they used to blow games like that against inferior opposition. I'm hopeful. Once they start clicking (read: Keane starts fitting in) they could make some waves this year.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Why does everyone think the Czechs suck? They had a late collapse against Turkey otherwise they would have went through to the quarters in Euros.

The Czechs are just as good as the English. Or perhaps the English aren't as good as people think. Good soccer countries qualify for the Euros

You hush your mouth. We'll come back with a vengeance against Newcastle. Don't you worry.

A little secret about me though. Technically, I would be called a woolyback, not a scouser, as I lived in Wallasey which is 'over the water'. I had a view of Liverpool over the Mersey from my bedroom window though!

Thanks for those links. Funny stuff.

Nice to see you around again.

The CL draw, while useful, was scary stuff. Nothing was going right, and a draw against a team that weak was not inspiring.

At least we didnt lose, but I hope they fare better on wednesday.

I think you misread that, the Czechs played well, it was a terrible game for England, not Czech.

Although the Czechs are developing this massive propensity to fall apart right at the end of a game, and Cech was terrible, he was fumbling the ball all over the place.

Liverpool are looking to poach winger, Riera, away from Everton. Like there was any doubt who the player would prefer to play for!

No kidding, and I love how Espanyol arent happy about it.

In other news, it looks like no dice on Barry, finally:

http://www.soccernews.com/barry-to-stay-at-villa/6086/

But, we might poach Milner from the magpies.

The home game against Standard Liegue in CL qualifying is today.

Great thread.

Liverpool looked ok in the first game, but were terrible in the second. Carra had a lucky one, and of course Stevie G to the rescue with another wonder blast. No need to panic yet. The partnership of Torres and Keano have looked good so far, just need to bury a couple.

Thank God we didn't sign Barry. overpriced and for the money, I think Alonso is a better choice. best midfield in the world! Would like to see Kuyt out and Pennant maybe get some more first team action. Rafa loves Dirk though so I don't see that happening.

Good call on no Chelsea or Man U talk in the thread. Theres no discussion really and I don't need to hear another Blues supporter try to give reasons why Fatty Frank is better than Stevie G! (No contest really)

I am kinda nervous about today, but confident the reds will pull it out

Come on you Reds!

Definately nervous today, and I'm another on the anti-Barry bandwagon. I dont think Alonso gets enough first team time, it seems he is saved a lot for CL matches, but watching him during the Euro, he was huge in Spain's midfield.

I'm interested in the possible acquisitions of Downing from Borough and Milner from Newcastle, those two have looked good and they shouldnt be outrageously expensive.

Right now though, I'm focusing on today's game. I like what Gerrard said about not playing very well but still getting the results shows what can be accomplished once the play improves.

I'm hoping they take it to Standard today.

Oh thank God Kuyt. Second to last minute of injury time, in the second half of extra time, and the reds march on with a 1-0 win.
