Chucky was excellent at the draft, apparently Kornheiser is terrified of flying, and this season's schedule pushed him to step down.

Does the scowl work in the broadcast booth?

He was a breath of fresh air at the draft. Absolutely hilarious.
And I don't like Kornheiser in the booth at all.

Great news. Kornheiser's act had grown incredibly stale. His monologues at the beginning of the broadcasts were incredibly sappy and over-dramatic.

I guess in the minority in thinking he did a terrible job on the draft.

Thank freaking gawd. Tony was freaking annoying and made it actually tough to listen to. His act was never any good, and the choice of him as dufus sidekick I always questioned. Gruden is a good football man who should be able to provide logical insight into the game and not just mindless banter.

Embarrassing. ESPN is a joke. They're one step up from TMZ.

I didn't mind Kornheiser, but I prefer broadcast teams that tell me something I didn't know. Not that I need a lesson, but I like it when guys say thing like, "You know the defense knew this was a run play because ...." or "This big run happened because the lineman set up the DE by doing......"
The whole MNF experiment of Dennis Miller in the Booth being the non-insider asking the questions people are wondering didn't work. Kornheiser was better in that respect, but still didn't bring anything special to the table.
Hopefully Gruden can bring his insider knowledge AND his excitement for the game.
The only football crew I really grew to hate was the crew of Tirico, McGuire and Theismann. The were smart and knew football, but I grew to hate how every week the trouble players were "just competitive and in reality were really great guys" and always mentioned how they had met time in meeting this week. Maybe once in a while that is true, but week after week it got stale. Really Paul? You met and chatted with each player on both rosters, at least that seems to be what you said, and they are all great people? Yeah, that Rae Carruth seems just swell.

Theismann set the standard for blowhard broadcasters that Phil Simms wants to emulate.

Of course he did. He was entertaining though. I think offering analysis of a pro football game is more up his alley then commenting on college players he's never heard of.
For the draft he was a name, for MNF he'll be a contributor.

I know he would get sedation before flights last year. Maybe he just likes the drugs, I know last time I got sedation I told my dentist I would have paid $4,000 for "this stuff" and asked for more for the road.

Apparently the NFL Network is pissed. They thought they had a verbal agreement with Gruden to do Thursday Night Football and weren't even told he may go to ESPN until it was announced.

I love Kornheiser on PTI and his radio show, but for MNF I didn't really like him either way.
I find most football announcers are pretty mediocre anyways and don't do much to add to the game. Even Madden I have a hard time finding what everyone likes in him. A bad PBP/analyst can really bring a game down though (Gumbels).
Gruden seemed okay at the draft, didn't know much about the prospects in general but did a good job of explaining of what a team would be thinking in drafting a specific position/type of player.
My only concern is that even at the draft I found he talked incredibly slow and in the booth I think he will really have to change his delivery as it will not work at all in the middle of a game.
