Help me find some beginner golf clubs
Hey team,
I am planning to take up golf this year so I need to find some clubs. I am not very good...I've golfed a few times/year max over the last few summers. Anyways, I want a beginner set that comes with a bag and all that junk (but I don't need anything fancy), and I don't want to break the bank. Where should I look? ANy advice on where to look or what to buy would be great.

Deoxyribonucleic Acid, for example... sounds impressive, right? But have you ever seen what happens if you put something in acid? It dissolves! If we had all this acid in our cells, we'd all dissolve! So much for the Theory of Evolution, Check MATE!

The Bargain Finder or kijiji/craigslist is probably a good place to check right now, people cleaning out their garages and selling all the stuff they don't want anymore.

Canadian Tire has a pretty good set of top flites. They come with all of the clubs including hybrids, a nice putter and a good bag for $400.00.
I don't think your going to get much better then that for beginner clubs.
On a side note I went out to the driving range today for the first time in a couple of years and my game is completely gone.
I had some nice drives, but I almost killed another golfer with my infamouse 90 degree to the left drive.

You sure it isn't $200?
Think I remember seeing them last year for that price but by the time I got back they were sold out so I went with plan B which was a similar set of John Daly's from Walmart for the same price.
A guest set for visitors, no complaints yet, couple of people even said they liked them.

The only thing I can hit with is a 7 iron anyway so I might as well just carry that around.

Mens or womans?
Right or left handed?
I have a used womens right handed set I could sell you.
If you are looking for something else, I suggest you go to Golftown. You'll get your best deal there for new clubs.

Yeah if you can afford new clubs go to Golftown or something like that...you can go and hit as many clubs as you want until you find what hits nice for you. That's what I did for my first set of clubs a couple years ago and I couldn't be happier. Just tell them your price range and they'll hook you up.

Mens right handed, but thanks anyways. Thanks for all the suggestions so far, folks.

The only thing I'll suggest is don't go all out buying clubs for your first set. It just isn't necessary. I wouldn't necessarily buy the cheapest set you can either, but if Sport Check or Golf Town or Canadian Tire have a decent set on sale for less than 3-400, buy those forsure.

When I first started golfing I bought a cheap set of (I can't remember the brand name) of irons from Sport Chek. Pw, 3-9, $100 on sale. Then I bought a good bag with a stand and both backpack style holder and classic over-shoulder. Tommy Armour, $150. A putter for $40, and a set of woods for $100. All told, ~400. It was a good investment because I finally got to learn how to hit the same clubs over the course of a year.
But eventually the cheapness of the clubs became apparent. Broke my 5 wood, bent the 3, and I never could hit that damn 1 very well anyway, so I gripped the wicked set of clubs that my sis bought for my dad that he simply never used.
Then my truck got broken into and the clubs got stolen, so I had to go back to the crappy ones I had.
That really sucked, so when CP poster frequitude posted an old set of Pings for sale, I figured what the hell?
Two years I've been playing with those clubs and I love the hell out of them!! Hear that freq? I fricken love those clubs!! I can't believe you sold them to me for $80!
So, the moral of the story is that quality clubs make a big difference. Play a year with some cheap clubs and you'll trash them duffing and skulling. Then buy a decent set next year. No reason why you should need another bag, though. Buy a good bag now and then it wont be a waste of money when you upgrade your clubs.
And another thing, don't be afraid to mix and match. Just because your irons are a certain brand name, doesn't mean your putter or driver or wedge has to be. If you see a club that is priced reasonably and the one you've already got is giving you grief, pick up the new one and try it out. Most golfers tend to have nearly two full sets of clubs at any given time because of this. Some people have more. Much more.

I saw a set of John Daly`s for $169.00 at Xcess Cargo of all places (I was there looking for a new spade).
I`ve never heard of John Daly as a brand, but when I picked them up and started swinging them a bit I think they would suffice as a beginner set.
It may even have included the bag....but might not have, I don`t recall

Here is a nice set at Golf Town... Paradise MBK 12PC Package for $279.99
http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/s...-P8936C26.aspx
The thing I really like about this set is that it comes with a set of 3, 4, and 5 hybrids in lieu of their iron equivalent. Hybrids are way easier to hit than irons ... especially for a beginner.
I have 3, 4, 5, and 6 hybrids and I love 'em.

For another $150.00 you can get a set of Taylormade R7 Draw irons at Nevada Bobs. http://www.nevadabobsgolf.ca/nevadab...?id=2009-05-06
My buddy has a set of these and he really likes them. Plus you wouldn't have to upgrade clubs anytime soon.
I would also recommend buying a stand bag. They will hold all the things you need and are much lighter to carry.

So for another $150 he only gets a set of irons..... no Driver, no 3 Wood, no 5 Wood, no putter, and no bag. To get these missing clubs and bag, the minimum he will spend in addition to the $430 for the Taylor R7 irons, would be at least $400.
The set I recommended comes with all of the above and is only $280. (not Taylor quality, granted, but the guy is only a beginner afterall... he won't notice the difference).

Fair enough.
Personally I believe it's more important to have a quality set of irons and start with average woods.
