Calgary drops one place on Mercer ranking & the hate-on for Calgary
So, the Herald had an article today on how we'd slipped one place on the Mercer ranking of best places to live. Not a really big deal in my opinion.
But what I'm wondering is, what's with the big self-hate-on-fest in the comments section of the article?

cannot really argue with that list.
Apart from Ottawa all dwarf us in population and none are truly landlocked like us.

I agree, I think 26th is a pretty good showing. Amazing that the top US city ranked 30th.

LOL! Why do the people stay here if they hate it so much? I lived in Fort McMurray for the majority of my life, this is friggin paradise in comparison. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

I tend to ignore the comments sections on articles.
Putting that aside, nice to see Edmonton still doesn't crack the list...
Putting even that aside, I would love to visit Vienna one day.

I've often wondered that myself. I have known several people from BC, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes over the years who are always ranting and raving about how crappy of a city Calgary is - and how we're all a bunch of rednecks and Bible thumpers who were lucky enough to stumble across some oil.
At least once, I will hear a "I can't wait to move back home, where this and this is so much better," or "I'm just here long enough to make some dough, and then I'm out of here!"
Yet, they never leave... and if they do, they usually head north.

Only major gripes I have with Calgary is an insistence on suburban growth, power centers and a lack of population in the core after work hours.
We're a pod people city and that hurts our cultural development.
Also, no ocean. I like oceans (but then I was born in CGY so I'm allowed).

Hahaha, I like how the first comment talks about "no rent controls" being a bad thing!

Have you seen the amount of condos that have gone up in Calgary, especially in the core in the last 15 years? Obv suburban growth excedes that, but Calgary is very much a town that just can't keep up with the demand to take a step back and do it in a more sustainable way

Oh, I've been watching the condo market closely (trying to buy in -- thanks oil bubble people.... ).
A lot of the condos are sitting unsold on the market for months without any bites. The supply greatly exceeds the demand, and yet more condos are being built in bizarre places like Bridlewood.
Seriously, who wants to live in a wooden condo building on the southern border of Calgary? I like this city, but it stops being Calgary after Fish Creek Park...

haha i think the herald cuts and pastes them every time they have an article on Calgary.
I've read that " I can't wait to go back to Sask as fast as I can" a billion times. Don't like it then get out fast!

Calgary is awesome and always will be. Don't like it here? I don't see any walls keeping anyone in.

Instead of posting comments on a news article, they should be doing something about it. I was born and raised here and I think the city isn't that great either. But now that I've moved back again, I'm starting to contribute to make this place better.
