Default Golf Lessons

I suck at golf, I have tried to teach myself to play, much like I taught myself to ski and snowboard.......after 4 years of frustration I think I need professional help.

Any suggestions on places to take lessons? Any good/bad experiences you would like to share. I live in the deep south so would prefer somewhere down there.

Thanks for you help in advance.

You definitely don't want golf lesions...they would be painful.

For golf lessons, I would recommend the RCGA Golf Centre at Blackfoot/Glenmore.

Yikes, if you are getting infections then you are definitely doing it wrong.

Doesn't McKenzie Meadows have a separate teaching are on the west side of the driving range? Other than that, I would suggest any course and deal with one of the pros. Maybe even look at Turner Valley or Highwood.

Sorry, no experiences. I've been playing for 20+ years, (wow that sounds scary for only being 32!), and have yet to perfect the game. I took a lot of lessons as a young kid, but none as an adult unfortunately.

Lessons are crucial to starting off an enjoyable golf life - in my experience when people don't take lessons and try to learn the game on their own are rarely successful.

Best of luck.

Not me, but friends have and wife will be this year. My friends were fairly satisfied with the quality of lessons there. They have several different options for group lessons, or one-on-ones. Decent prices and the staff seem competent. Also, good range and nice central location.

I'm hitting the driving range and picking up the clubs for the first time in about 4 years this weekend. If you hear about a guy killing himself on a driving range. Its me.

I'm trying to make it through my life without getting any golf lessons. I've been playing for about 15 years, and so far, haven't had any.
Sure some days I get the urge, but usually I can resist.
If I were going to get lessons, I would go for the 5 day golf school at Kokanee Springs in the spring.

I'd ask how often are you playing? Why I ask is because back long ago when I had nothing but time on my hands I played around 50 rounds a year. You are lucky if there is a 5 month season so I was out at least 10 times a month. Heck somedays all I did was play golf. Would start with a nine hole pitch and putt for a warmup. Then go out and play 18 or 36 holes.

No lessons and my game just got better and better and better.

Now I'm lucky to go out once a month and my game is always the same. Never know what shot I'm going to hit. When I played a lot I knew exactly what club to hit without any fancy little gadget to help me. I was super confident over the ball. Who knows if my swing was just right but I got results.

I find it frustrating now as it's like starting over every time I go out. So if you are trying to improve while not being able to play that much I can't see how you go forward. Lessons would be a good boost but nothing works in any sport except playing it a lot.

I took lessons through eagle quest and they were really good. $130 for four seperate lessons that cover all of the basics. The next year we took the intermediate "build a swing" lessons and they were very good as well. If you are a weekend duffer then I would recommend both. We took the lessons about three years ago and when I hit the driving range for the first time this year I still had all the positioning steps they taught in my head. It definitely stuck with me.

EDIT: It's funny this thread came up because just this morning I was pulling the information for my fiance so she could enroll...

I second the suggestion for the RCGA range. They have a lot of really good teachers there. Some golf courses you go to can be pretty hit and miss depending on who you get. RCGA in the past has been full of very competant teachers.

Key is to go out and practice what they are teaching you between lessons. You need to ingrain what you have learned into your swing so you can continually improve.

It's a tough game but like someone else said the more you play the better you get. Key to getting good at golf is muscle memory and practice whichs breeds confidence. Golf is so much of a mental game you need to confidence out on the course.

Good luck!

Guess i'm the exception to the rule. For the most part i read a lot of books on the golf swing and learned through trial and error. That and getting pointers from other golfers on while playing.

I agree with the above. There is something to be said for playing a lot. My game improved a lot last year when i was playing 3 times a week. Playing the same course helped too as i got to know where to hit the ball and what clubs to use in certain situations. Makes a huge difference in your game when your confidence level is high.

Yeah welcome to my world and I have four kids. Going to depend on your goals. Enjoying the game a little bit more thank to some good lessons -- good.

Hoping to get quite good at the game --not a chance unless you can play.

I would suggest if you can manage it. Take the lessons. Join a league and then you will be out there on a regular basis.

Otherwise just be like the majority of us. Enjoy a few hours away from it all and hack the green stuff to death.
