So, is this swine flu any worse than the thousands of children dying everyday from AIDS, genocide, etc, etc?
Or is it any worse than all the drunk driving accidents that happen on a daily basis?
Because the media sure thinks it is.

Swine flu, AIDS and genocide. One of those three sells papers. The other two people don't like to know about because it makes them feel sad.

Not to mention that only one can we really combat or care to fight against. They can up with a vaccine for swine flu so that makes it a possible success story. AIDS is another one like cancer where they just look dumb because they seemingly can't beat it like cancer etc. And think of all those profits that would go down the drain if they came up with a cure.
Genocide is the ultimate bad news story because we know it goes on. We decide whether those humans are worth saving by the color of their skin, religion, economic value etc. We calculate the cost, risk of saving them and then no doubt decide to let them get butchered.

What are you getting at? The world isn't idealist. You can't really blame developed countries for taking priority with this, can you?
The situation is Africa is terrible, no doubt, and it's been the way of the world for centuries that Africa gets left behind, I'm just not sure what you're making a point of? Should the US, Canada and other nations not be doing all they can to stop this virus?

is your precious snowflake at risk of getting genocided (yes, its a word cause i said so) on their way to school in middle america today? no? then there's no fear of it. no fear means it doesn't sell papers and if it doesn't sell papers the media doesn't cover it.
its sad but true - if its happening to someone else halfway around the world people won't care about it. as soon as its happening in your own back yard... EVERYBODY PANIC!

In fairness, the word genocide is thrown around way too loosely now. But the point is taken.

Anyone else find it ironic that it takes a comedy show to point that out and make sense of the news?
One of the best Jon Stewart clips I've seen in a long time

Oops. I must admit I don't read the random thoughts thread though.
At least now the clip is in a thread on the same topic.

Well, that is kinda my point.
I realize that one can get infected by being on the same bus/train/car/etc....but to me the media is screaming PANIC, and thousands of people die everyday from the flu/cancer/drinking and driving/smoking/genocide/you name it.
I just think us people here in North America have become to caught up in our way of life that when something like this happens, we panic. Or some of us do at least.
Thousands of people are dying, everyday.....and we're going to PANIC, because of a swine flu?
I get being cautious, and I'm glad people like AC's dad are being cautious, but it is their JOB to be cautious.
I dunno, just seems weird to me how the media is blowing all of this up.

Yup. And its not even a real danger. That death toll of over 150 they've been frightening people with? Yea - that's bull. Death toll as of this moment? 7.

This is the new summer news blockbuster...
Avian flu, West Nile Virus, Sars, Shark attacks, killer bees....
Every year, the news focuses on some kind of peril like this.

There are 4 threads on it so far.

This should fit in this thread quite nicely.
Swine Flu Happens Under Democratic Presidents.
"I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out then under another Democrat president Jimmy Carter," said Bachmann. "And I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence."
