Bumping threads and the fata

Can we get some clarification on rule #7 from the Calgary Puck User Guildines?

The fata, while once was a fun thing for Calgary Puck, has become to have annoying affects here. People either want to fata somebody who starts a thread where somebody made a similar post on the 23rd page of another thread, or somebody brings up an old thread. I find it a waste of time to start to read a thread only to realize I'm reading year old, or months old material, and then I have to jump around until I find when the thread was bumped to read the most recent discussion. It is equally annoying to receive or see somebody get fata'd for starting a thread that is similar to one that ended several months or years ago.

What are the guidlines for how far back a person should search before he/she can safely post without getting fata'd and/or criticized for not looking for the proper thread. I thought several months should be ok, but it doesn't always appear to be that way.

Usually its a common sense thing I think, people just say fata because they like to say it.

There is a mod that I'd like to get once I update the forum software that after a specific amount of time it gives you a bigass reminder "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO BUMP THIS X MONTHS OLD THREAD??"

Just lock the darn thing automatically if there hasn't been a post in 4 months.

If there is something relevant in the locked thread, people can link to it then carry on the discussion.

(and yeah, in the past you have said the forum software can't handle this *sigh*)

There's actually a mod that does that as well, so should be doable. Just don't want to add any more mods before I do an upgrade.
