Hey Guys,
Some of you may remember that I posted a topic last year (just after the playoffs) about wanting to pick up my life, and move to Europe for a year.
Well, I am finally doing it. April 29th is the day, and I leave here, spend 3 or 4 days in London, and then I am on to Prague where I will start to look for a job. I am hoping to find a job teaching english in either Prague or Krakow Poland....If I cannot, then Any labor job will do. I just want to make enough money to live for a year, while I spend all of my saved cash on travelling through eastern Europe.
Plans right now are to be gone, out of Calgary, for One full year.
Nervous Excitement is building....And hey, if any of you can help me get a job in Eastern Europe (In Software Dev would be AWESOME), it would be VERY appreciated.
<deep breath!>

If you are of the heterosexual variety, Prague will treat you very well, my friend. Enjoy.
Oh and congrats on touring eastern Europe rather than the crowded (and to tell you the truth, rather homogenized) western portions. It still has elements of authenticity, and is still fairly affordable for a Canadian. Make your way over to Budapest ( and Lake Balaton if you have the chance) and you will find another amazing city....

as hard as it may seem to believe, the girls in Slovakia are even hotter. And as a bonus, the men are anything but....so if you are anywhere near normal looking, you have a great opportunity.

T5, sounds like you know a little about the area in questions. All tips about where to go in that area of the world are much appreciated.
The two places that I REALLY want to go are Krakow Poland, and Adriatic coast of Croatia. I have been to Prague and Astria before, and I am looking forward to going back once again.
If you ask me, T5, Eastern Europe is MUCH better than Western Europe (Although I am dying to see Paris). I fine the west too crowded, and to reliant on the Tourism industry. Go East if you really want to learn the culture.
Also, its MUCH cheaper.

well, i was born there and still have family back there i visit every few years.
Probably the nicest places in Eastern Europe are the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia, since they are in the midst of transforming into western europe but still have a charming authtenticity to them. Plus cities all around there seem like they were transformed from miedieval fairy-tales. All of them have amazing sights to see too, while still being rather affordable (although less so as the years go by).
if you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

How is Czech for english speakers, can you make it?
|
From my experiences (very few) as long as you stay in the major cities, there are many english speakers.
Any city or town off the beaten path is a little more difficult.
I am pretty good at picking up the basics of foreign languages, so I will learn what I need to live comfortablly.

Most young people speak English, so you're not going to have too much of a problem there. Older people are more prone to speak German as their second language though, so that helps if you know it.

You'll be fine. You have more balls then me (figuratively of course because I hope you have no more than 2) Isn't your brother on the board here he can give us updates on your whereabouts.
Hopefully you will find it's way better here, at least that's what I've told buddies who have gone away to find themselves, they almost always come back.
Bet your parents are apprehensive. [/b][/quote]
My parents have actually been the most supportive people about this. My dad loves the idea...he did something similar when he was 23....moved to Europe with 3 frineds, bought a van, and toured for 6 months.
Yeah, my brother is on the board, but I will have internet, and come on all the time to give you updates, and to get updates on the Flames.....I hope they are playing by then.
And its interesting, your comments on finding it better here. That is kind of the reason I am going. I've been fed up with the north american society recently, and decided that this trip was the best thing for me....'You don't know what you got till its gone....'
I am REALLY looking forward to my trip just to spend those first 7 days back in Calgary, and Canada.
....as weird as that sounds, its true.

Marty, you frickin nut!!! I didn't think you were actually gonna go thru with this. 317 will not be the same without you! Actually it hasn't been the same all year. But man... you are brave. I wish you best of luck. I will be in Europe from May 18-Jun5th. I won't be going thru Czech, but I will go thru Austria. Maybe we can meet for a beer? I never got to take any money from you this year playing poker either!

To tell you the truth, Lake Balaton is only shadow of its former self. Very dirty and with neglected surroundings (including hotels etc.)
In eastern Europe, Czech Rep, Poland and Slovakia are a must see IMO, Hungary not so much. Other than Budapest there is not much to see there, and Budapest itself is clearly behind Prague or Warszaw (or even Vienna for that matter).
Bratislava is pretty small, but the real treasure of Slovakia (other than hot girls I gotta agree with you there is outside of the capital. Head to mountains and smaller towns, you will be amazed. If you are into trekking and winter sports, it is the place to be. Dont miss castles, chateus and historical cities.
Prague is easily the most amazing city I`ve been to, not even Paris compares. There are plenty of other cities (Ceske Budejovice, Karlovy Vary, Brno) and places (castles etc) worth visiting. The countryside is not very interesting (same in Hungary).
Poland has plenty of history, but the country (especially outside of Warszaw) is behind Slovakia, Czech Rep and Hungary when it comes to development, so gotta keep that in mind when you are travelling by trains for example.
