On February 12, 2009, reports surfaced that province regulators ("Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux", or RACJ) requested a set of rule changes that differ from the Unified Rules of MMA has put the event at risk from taking place.[2] The proposed rule changes banned elbow and knee strikes, mandated a smaller cage, and would stop a fight when a fighter gets knocked down.[2][3] Before, the RACJ has followed the Unified Rules, but as laws differ by city, state, or province, a commission can insist on the usage of its own rules.[4]
On February 18, 2009, it was announced that UFC officials were able to convince the RACJ to reverse its stand and use the Unified Rules. As a concession, the UFC agreed to the banning of foot stomps for this event.[5] Therefore, UFC 97 will remain in Montreal on April 18, 2009, as originally planned

A lot of great fights in this one. Much better than the UFC 17: Redemption.

Dana was disappointed with the main event. Said Liddell will never fight for the UFC again.

Ya Dana wasn't happy with the Silva fight. Thought it was really boring and he's all about entertainment, which that fight was far from entertaining. Pretty sad that the Iceman is done, what a career he had.

Did Dana die a little inside when Liddell lost again?

Terrible, terrible main event. GSP vs. BJ Penn was the first UFC fight I actually watched live, I'm just starting to get into the whole MMA thing. This fight was definitely a turn off, they'll have to try a hell of a lot harder to get me to watch again after seeing this crap.

Holy hell! How much does a lower tier ticket cost to these events?

My calculations make the average ticket $228.

Ringside seats can go for around $1000 at some events, not sure what the prices were in Montreal.

As for the fights, I only caught the last one and was fairly bored by it. You can't really blame Silva though, he was so dominant there was really no need for him to go to the ground with a guy who is a world champion BJJ. Going to the ground would have been the only chance he had to lose his belt, it would have been stupid to do it. Leites couldn't compete on his feet, and couldn't get the take down, so it pretty much became a standoff.

I'm not sure who can beat Silva. If he comes down to fight GSP I think he'll win, although I'd be pulling for GSP. If he goes up to fight Evans he'd probably win, and again I'd be pissed. He's just that much better than everyone right now. Something's gotta give though, cause they can't throw him in there for another fight like that one. Purists may appreciate such thorough displays of domination, but they don't play well to much of the fan base.

.
My tix in the 100 level were priced at $450, but got them on StubHub for $265 each. That's a lot of dough and I doubt I'd pay it again.
