ESPN reports that free agent slugger Carlos Delgado has agreed in principle to a four-year contract with the Florida Marlins worth $52 million US. The deal includes a vesting option for a fifth year that could push the contract to $64 million US.

I thought he already signed with the Mets or something. Or was that just speculation. I don't follow baseball much, but I always laugh when I hear about these redonkulous contracts.

Yup, speculation.
Rumours had him going to one of the following: Rangers, Mets, Orioles, Marlins (looks like maybe they have won?).
Mets supposedly came on strong...then I think Delgado's agent said it was between the Mets and Marlins...then the Orioles...then the Orioles dropped out, but the Rangers came on...then ...
well, you get the point.

God I can't believe baseball teams. I've got an idea. let's give a guy who's got his best years behind him a contract that goes untill he is 37 freakin years old. If there was ever an argument to fix hockey, it should just be "Look at baseball, do you want that happening?". Of course, I suppose the players would all say "Heck yes I do".
Stupid Baseball.

Way to much money for Delgado but considering he is the best option for what a lot of these teams need I am not all that suprised that someone finally broke down and met his demands.

Agreed, but the whole market has been crazily out of whack this year. Look at the $$ and/or years guys are getting...Pedro for 4 years (?! - with that potential arm trouble), Clemens, the Jays 5 plus million for Schoeneweis, etc etc....

From the Fish's perspective one of the worst things about this move is that because Delgado is in the NL all his at bats will come at first base where he ain't that great. Delgado is better suited to the AL where they at least have the option of DHing him (although this was apparently something he wouldn't accept).

Wish I was enough of a stat-head (ok, maybe not...) to determine if Delgado's offence sufficiently "covers/makes up for/etc" his defensive rating?

I agree that Carlos is btter suited to play DH but according to trumours he was unwilling to be a full-time DH or even play there most of the time.
Why guys with defensive defiencies seem to make demands like this is beyond me. The team is better off with them there and the guy is saved by not having to look like a idiot every game making silly mistakes all the time.

Loria sucks, which makes me hate the Marlins even more.
Cya Carlos...you were never a clutch hitter you struck out to much and you got way to much money. I am glad he did go there instead of Baltimore though, helps the Jays out a little.
