That's exactly what I said when I saw the story yesterday. Making all the top predators "cute" in animation creates really dangerous preconceptions that people have about the actual thing. Most people only see wild animals in really distorted ways - zoos, cute kids' movies, maybe the occasional TV-safe documentary. Then they go do stupid stuff like this, because they think that what they've seen is real, and polar bears really do just sit around drinking Coke all day.
She's just lucky they bears didn't really attack her (despite what the media keep saying), they seemed more curious than anything. I can't wait to see what Colbert comes up with for the Threatdown next week.

good point, when a polar bear attacks you, it ain't going to take a long time, and there ain't going to be much left of you.

Gimme a break. What a lame excuse. The woman is a f'ing moron. That's all there is to it. It's not because of cuddly wuddly kids movies and zoos. And suggesting so is about the most ridiculous thing I've heard all day.

Seriously. Whats with this society that we start looking for someone to blame for idiotic behavior of stupid people. Its because of that we have those stupid warning on TV commercials "do not try this at home, these are professional stunt drivers on closed course."
Thankfully this was in Germany, if it was in the US she or her family would sue the Zoo, possibly the Bear for damages.

anyone who has seen a polar bear in real life would not doubt their intentions. they are predators and they have nothing above them on the food chain except global warming and men with guns.
the saddest i have ever seen btw was a polar bear at the singapore zoo...which is right at the equator more or less. the farthest place on the planet from an environment in which he could natively survive. the glass on his enclosure was warm to the touch (warm water) and his fur was yellow, not white or close to white. it was very sad.
i always wonder what would happen if a polar bear was let loose at the south pole...
regarding stupid people going for a swim...she was lucky to get out alive. i sure hope that the bear had his shots.

No doubt she's a moron. Natural human instinct should have told her to run like hell from the largest living land predator. But just being an idiot isn't going to break what should be about the strongest animal instinct - to not get eaten by something with big teeth that's about 4 times your size. Some other influence has to suggest that it would be safe and fun to do what she did. Delusions like that don't come out of nowhere.

I hear it over and over again from people that say that we need to learn to live in harmony with nature. Nature doesn't care, it will rip our guts out and devour our steaming entrails without a second thought. We need to live with respect for nature, and try to avoid putting ourselves into situations where nature will eat us and leave us as a smelly pile of scat.
It would have been fine with me if the bears would have finished this stupid woman off and removed her from the gene pool, thats natures role.

I'm a little disappointed in the polar bear's lacklustre performance in bears' mission to exterminate all idiots.
