Nintendo DSi vs PSP
I just recent purchased PSP for my son's b-day. Had I knew that Nintendo was coming out with their upgraded DS, I might have made him hold out for it. We have a ton of DS games left from previously. We have 3 DS Lites and 1 DS all in various states of functionality (yeah, yeah.... spent frivolously when I had the $$$).
Anyhow I like the added features of the DSi and think the touch screen sets it apart from the PSP. Thoughts?

Really depends on the type of games you like. For me, I prefer the PSP with the better graphics and shooting type games.
I got a DS for my birthday and I've played it only a few times like cooking mamma and what not. I just don't find the DS all the fun, but i'm not too familiar with it but I don't think it's all that different. But it seems like all my friends like the DS so.... yeah.

The DS has better portability. You can stick it in your pants pocket and it won't jab into your thigh the way the PSP will. I do like the functionality of the PSP better though. It doubles as an MP3 players, picture viewer, and can store important files.

I think the DSi can do that now too, can't they? I figure so anyway since it has an SD slot on it. At the very least I know it can take pics due to the camera both on the outside and the inside of it.
Anyway yah I agree it comes down to what games you like. I like my DS games personally. Picross ftw!

Depends on what your into. If your into more kid like games then the DS is the way to go. If you are into RPG's like me then the PSP is a must have for any RPG fan!! PSP is the game system I spend the most hours on, love the way they port some of the classics like FF1 and 2.

DS gets ports and updates of classic RPGs as well - FFIV, and CHRONO TRIGGER being some of the recent examples.

If you want a media device, like for watching videos or listening to music, PSP is better.
But the DS completely destroys it games wise, in pretty much every single genre.

You sure about that? RPGs are my main genre, so this concern has come up a lot for me...
DS
Final Fantasy 3 and 4
Dragon Warrior 4, 5 and 6
Chrono Trigger
Rune Factory 1 and 2
PSP
Final Fantasy 1 and 2
I don't know much about PSPs library, so feel free to fill in some big ones I've left out, but the ones I listed for DS were pretty much the deciding factor for me.
One thing that keeps the PSP a viable option is the fact that it can be modded to play original PS1 games... like Final Fantasy 7 for instance.

Why are your DS's in various states of functionality? Just send them into Nintendo for free warranty replacement. I've done this without a reciept and like 2 years after I bought my DS.

I dont actually own a PSP yet, and Im not entirely sure why not, but the PSP is the only place to get Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, and eventually in NA Final Fantasy: Dissidia (its already been released in Japan, although I guess this game is closer to a fighting game than an RPG) and further down the road Final Fantasy(agito)XIII
also on the PSP you can buy the first two Star Ocean games (renamed as first departure and second evolution) Star ocean:second story (second evolution) is one of my favorite PS1 RPGs
not too sure about other games available, but the FF exclusives on PSP and Star Ocean are enough for me to want to get one, its just a matter of actually tracking down a copy of Crisis Core first, because I havent seen one in stores...I may just buy it through amazon or something
the only thing Ill say about Nintendo, as a consumer their business model of basically releasing the same handheld console every year but "slimmer" or with a little bit of added functionality annoys me. However if I was a share holder, I would be laughing all the way to the bank

The DS's RPG line-up has been sold woefully short in this thread.
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Chrono Trigger
The World Ends With You
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI (upcoming)
Dragon Quest IX (upcoming)
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Mario and Luigi 3 (upcoming)
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
Phantasy Star 0
Blue Dragon Plus
Shinig Force Feather (upcoming)
Sands of Destruction (upcoming)
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (upcoming)
Etrian Odyssey
Etrian Odyssey II
Summon Night: Twin Age
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fate
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time
Children of Mana
Blue Dragon Plus
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Disgaea DS
Luminous Arc 2
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Avalon Code
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (upcoming)
Plus more and more support from Square Enix, Sega, and Atlus. There's no question which platform is better for RPGs.

I did not mention the up and comings or even all the RPG's for the PSP or I would have been another half an hour. Your right, there is no question which platform is better for RPG's and it is not the DS. The PSP has more of the better titles, the better FF's, ect.. The support is the same for both platforms so not sure where your going there. My son has a DS so I have played both, not only is the library better for the PSP the system looks and feels better.

The only good PSP RPGs I have seen are remakes of games I already own so what IS the point of getting them again... not to mention if you have a DS and not a DSi you get all the GBA games to play (yes I know you can just run them through an emulator on the PSP).

What's upcoming for PSP? Dissidia is the only game in any genre to really care about, it's practically dead, while DS is quickly becoming the best selling gaming platform of all time and no signs of slowing down. You'd have to be out of your mind to buy a PSP over a DS at this point in time.
And better FF's? Come on. The FF4 remake alone beats every Final Fantasy title on PSP.

Rumor is a new psp will be out end of 2009 so maybe hold off. Right now I'm using my ds a lot more than my psp. Colors! for a homebrew enabled ds is awesome.

It's a shame there's not a 'best of both worlds' between these players. Give me Sony's hardware and Nintendo's software and I'd buy two. And throw in a Sony title or two for some more action games.
The touchscreen is good for some games, but annoying or useless for others. I want a joystick when I play Super Mario 64!
