Well...this should get interesting. According to CNN, the rocket that N Korea's been threatening to launch for some time has launched. What's the next step? I imagine we're gonna here lots of sanction talks now, as I don't imagine it was ever going to get shot down.

I remember reading an article last year on the estimated damage done IF a war broke out with N. Korea. Basically the best case scenario was about 500,000 deaths in the first week due to the fact N. Korea has a TON of munitions aimed squarely at massive populations and cities south of the demilitirized zone.
Hopefully Kim Jong Il just dies and maybe sanity breaks out in that area, the worst case is he realizes theres no successor and he basically takes his cult, the cult of N Korea and pulls a Heaven's Gate, but instead of juice and nike's its bombs and a massive attack on the south killing millions before the war ends.
I can't read it right now, but what, exactly, did they launch? By rocket, what type of rocket is it? This is a place where someone just needs to assassinate a bitch.

The North Koreans claim it's just a communications satellite.
The US begs to differ, claiming it's an ICBM capable of striking Alaska.
Either way, I don't see the US being capable of doing much of anything to stop them, other than futher posturing.
I wonder if Japan or south Korea will go kick them in the head over this?
I'm betting not... there'll be a lot of posturing and chest beating. The US/South Korea/Japan will bring on some new found sanctions where the only real byproduct will be more of a tough life for the civilian population, and Kim Jong-Il will remain insane... pretty much status quo.
Hopefully Kim Jong Il just dies and maybe sanity breaks out in that area,
Dunno, i heard his son is a even bigger loon. Something like his older son doesn't want the reigns and the younger one has the backing of the army or something along those lines.

The older brother was arrested trying to sneak into Japan a couple of weeks ago, and Kim Jong Il feels he's too foppish to be a leader so the young one will probably take on the code name of Party Center and start learning the craft.
For someone that everyone calls insane, Kim Jong Il to me is crazy like a fox, he has managed to manipulate the 6 party talks for ever.

I figure Japan will be the ones who really push this to resolution. They can't be happy about the prospect of the Korea's going at it with them caught between the US and China.
Plus they have some financial muscles to flex as well which will get some attention.

It was a kimchi rocket.

From what I have read, any sort of military engagement with North Korea could be a disaster.
North Korea has 1.19 million active troops and 7.70 million reserve troops. Up to 3500 tanks with an additional 2500 armored vehicles, about 10000 total ground artillery, and 11000 anti-air artillery.
All told, the world would rather not fight them and that gives North Korea some leverage. Unfortunately.
