Default Fighter Jets scrambled - Low Flying, south bound

So outside, i heard a jet engine rumble real low, and go on my deck to see 8 F18sflying in attack formating going straight south. they are flying with their afterburners full on, almost blowing out windows.

There has to be a reason for scrambling F18s going straight south - Anyone with RCAF contacts know whats going on?

I've seen jets many a time leave from the airport. Usually RAF ones. Maybe training?

Attack formation? Sorry I have to chuckle. Maybe you're an ex-pilot and know what you're talking about, but until I know for sure, I have to chuckle.

A few flew over my building Chaparral last summer. Real low, VERY loud, everything was shaking. But most likely just heading to the airport.

If they are that low its a sign of something serious, as I understand it they have to fly much higher when doing supersonic speeds.

RAF Suffield and RAF YYC never fly that low and dont use CF18s, which these were. They were so low you could easily make them out as CF18s. Also, its odd that they would be going full throttle so low - all my neighbours were outside as it was deafeningly loud.

I actually didn't even know we had fighter jets stationed full time here.

I would guess they are flying to an area just outside of Medicine Hat called Suffield. I see them all of the time at work.

Probably just a drill or something. I didn't hear anything in the SW.

I remember standing in the Moose Jaw military base a few years ago while the Blue Angels were doing a practice run. They zipped overhead, and you could literally feel the air being sucked out of your lungs. It was pretty intense.

I am not an ex pilot, just played too much Falcon as a kid. I guess I was just excited when I posted, so I am not sure its attack position, but it is as far as I know.

A second wing just went over, same thing low, fast, loud full throttle.

These are going right over my house. Loud enough to shake the windows. We're right by the river in Parkdale near the Crowchild/Memorial intersection.

4 groups of two is what we've seen so far. About a minute or two between each fly over.

Just heard them -- very loud -- and then two minutes later saw one circle low over Sait. I'm down in Kensington at work. F18's for sure.

I am familiar with our airforces though, and yes, there arent any jets stationed here, but they could be from our biggest RCAF wing, stationed up in Cold Lake could be going to suffield to do drills with the Brits - I am just saying it cause i have lived in garrison for years and never seen them come over, much less so loud that all my neighbours were outside...

just wonderin what it is

Yeah might be a drill. Could even just be a normal flight. As I mentioned in my first post, those things to seem real freakin loud when they are low.

Ohhhh, here they come as I type this! Yeah last summer was louder. (Not trying to one up you, just saying, I don't think it's an emergency scramble)

EDIT: Was really funny, I was in the middle of typing, 'well nothing here yet, and I'm about as straight south as you get', when I could hear a low rumbling in the distance, haha.)

If they're going over Sait then they're going the wrong way.

Its probably just an excercise, usually F-18's aren't stationed at the Airport, they go there for refueling for the tip back home.

The CF-18's badly need to be replaced. They were requisitioned 30 years ago in 1979!

It would have been really cool if we had F-14s as nobody else operates them and sadly they were retired and the planes and their dies are all junked and scrapped (so that Iran can't get parts).
