Just wondering if any of you have sponsored a child before? Ive always considered it but end up not following through because i want to make sure that most of my money would end up in the proper hands.

Thanks for any help in finally making a decision

My kids both sponsor kids and love it. Before someone asks, we give a lot to charity but have never done this in particular. I believe they're World Vision.

Hey, it's our duty to deduct all we legally can. Yes these are deductible?

yes; I sponsor several kids with funds out of my Canadian and American bank accounts, and it is tax deductable on either side of the border

for the OP, World Vision has the lowest admin costs of the organization i looked into, so most of your donation supposedly goes to helping the kid.

World Vision 87%
CCF 83%
PLAN 80%

I was just being a knob ... there's nothing wrong with getting a tax deduction for charitable donations. I make donations through my company sometimes just for the sake of the deduction.

How about the one that puts the most money into the kids hands but isnt religion orientated?

I dont want some guy pushing some religion on a third world country with my dime.

World Vision's money isn't going to "helping the kids":
http://www.hamsa.org/world.vision.htm

I'm not Cheese. I'm not Thor. I don't think Christianity or other religions are evil. I certainly appreciate any efforts that any people of all race and religion do out of the goodness of their hearts. However, it disgusts me that people will take advantage of a desperate situation to impose their belief system. So that 87% don't impress me much.

Do you get to put a decal on the kid, like in NASCAR?

Just to be clear, is WorldVision one of the best charities out there? Obviously I could trust that the money I send them really is helping a child?

We have sponsored a child through World Vision for a few years now and it has been a great experience so far.
To answer Questions:
1) If O/H is of great importance to you, then do your research, I used to be as well and found WW to be one of the best. Having said that, I now consider it less of a priority, because in very few of these organizations is the church or are the leaders making serious money. Some of your money goes toward marketing for other sponsors (obviously) and some goes to the salaries of people who are actually doing the ground work.

2) Relgion. Yes WW is a organized by a religious leader with whom I strongly disagree (I am also not religious). When making this decision, this was a significant issue for me, but once again, it matters less now. (Can elaborate on this if required)

3) Yes this is tax deductible. However, at $35/month/child ($420/ year/child), you will need to sponsor several children or donate to other charities for this to be considered significant, as the tax savings on the first couple of hundred dollars of donated money are quite insignificant.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and information. After reading some more i decided to sponsor a child today. As i have prolonged it to long already.

I went with WV, I am kind of mixed about religion part of it. I picked a location of a place Ive been to a few times. So i can relate to the living conditions. Kids deserve such a better chance.
