The tobacco plant could soon redeem itself in the eyes of public health experts, say scientists who are producing huge amounts of a powerful but prohibitively expensive HIV drug inside modified tobacco leaves.

The most effective way griffithsin can prevent HIV infection is in a vaginal cream applied before sex, said Kenneth Palmer, a researcher at Owensboro Cancer Research Program who was the corresponding author on the study.
A cigarette containing griffithsin hasn't been discounted either, said Palmer.

Brings a whole new meaning to the post sexual cigarette! It will now be the pre-sexual cigarette!

Interesting stuff, but they neglected to include the quote from the pope about how this stuff actually causes more HIV infections than it prevents.


(Although in reality, I don't think it will do that much... the people who would take the time to apply a topical creme are likely the sort who are already taking safe sex measures. Anything short of an actual vaccine is just a small step at this point. )

I saw the same thing in Amsterdam...and thought the same thing when reading the story.
