I've had good luck with the Humane Society. You might have to monitor new arrivals for a week, but I've found some wonderful cats to adopt there. Our dog was a pound rescue too, and he's been terrific.

Aw sorry for the loss of your original cat, but a new kitty will be a great addition to your family. I dont live in Calgary, but when I was looking for a cat here in San Jose, a poster on CP sent me a link to a rescue group where I ended up getting my cat from. Her name is Molly and she's a Hurricane Katrina rescue. Such a sweet pea.

We just picked up a couple kittens from Happy Cat Sanctuary in Strathmore. Good experience.

You could go to the humane society in Calgary or Cochrane, they usually have quite a few kittens and older cats.

The humane society in South Calgary always seems to have a wide variety of cats/kittens.

I highly recommend the Meow Foundation. Great program and a no-kill society.
My wife and I have 2 cats from there and love them to pieces. The great thing about MEOW is they Include Spaying/Neutering, Vaccines and PErmanent I.D. chips into the cost of $175 for a kitten. At the time we got our cats (about 3 years ago) it would actually cost more for a free cat (spaying and shots cost more than $175).
I'm not sure about the Humane society now, but at the time we were looking the Humane society would cost a lot more for the cats than MEOW, and the Humane Society will not hold on to cats for very long before they would kill them (this might have changed)
As for MEOW, they send all cats and kittens to foster homes where they are cared for in loving homes by cat owners until they are ready for adoption (rather than stuck in cages at a Humane society). When you adopt a MEOW cat, they are already adapted to a home environment and i many cases they are already used to children.
I really can't say anything bad about MEOW. CHeck out the Cat-a-logue http://www.meowfoundation.com/bins/c...cid=110&lang=1
They dont appear to have any kittens right now (and when they do they go fast), but they constantly have kittens coming in.

I have a question about Meow, if I get a kitten can I name it or do I stick with their name?

I just went through this whole process. Meow Foundation, Humane Society, etc. are great places to rescue a cat but nearly impossible to find a kitten.
Without a doubt, Kijiji is best for finding kittens. There's always tons of ads, but they move fast. Just stay at it. It took me about two weeks until I found one.

Name it what you want.
I just took a browse, that Dill is a really cute cat. If I wanted to be the crazy cat lady, he'd be next on my list.

Said it before in other threads, but agree on the Meow Foundation. They seem to take great care in placing the right cat with the right owner.
Meow lists 27 - 5 month to 1 year old cats and I've often seen them with a long list of kittens under 5 months.

We got our cat from the Meow foundation and it was awesome. Humane society is good as well though.

I came on to recommend the meow foundation as well, Humane Society is another good place of course. Go and find one that 'adopts' you.
For it's name: if it's small enough, it won't care...actually if it's older, I doubt it would care too.
But you know, be a bit greedy and pick up a kitten, I know older cats need homes too, but kittens are so damn awesome.
