I was also wondering if maybe there was some bacteria in the water that killed them.

Isn't that in the new area by the elephants?
Last time I was at the zoo that part was closed off as it was still being built.

That's horrible, it was a exhibit I was looking forward to seeing. If someone poisoned them I hope they burn!

I have a feeling that somebody will blame Syncrude for this.

I saw them a few weeks ago and it is (was) a really good exhibit, I thought it was better than similar ones in big US aquariums I've been to.

What bothered me were all the damn d-bags that didn't follow the rules like washing your hands, not trying to grab the rays and bringing food in. I wouldn't be surprised if they were poisoned by a combination of Deep-woods Off, Coppertone and spilled "screamers".

Sure the zoo could have had a better system in place to ensure ppl wash up, etc, other than the briefing they give before you entered, but still, too many idiots were being stupid the day I went.

It is a "feed the Sting Rays" attraction so it's very possible that security was unaware of someone or something (by accident of course) came in contact with the Sting Rays.
But who knows it's possible that climate change was also a factor like Mel said.

This is exactly what I was thinking (except I'm not sure what you mean by the 'screamer' reference). But I'm sure it had something to do with all the people interacting with them. Probably not on purpose, but possibly so, some bacteria or chemical was introduced by the public that killed the rays.

If he means ice cream mixed with slurpees...I can't imagine the sting rays NOT liking them. Screamers have to be about the best thing going right now.

Hahah, we had that at our HS cafeteria but we called them snowballs, which I'm sure for MRCboiolgy is something else...

Ok, I apologize if that was too far, I just know he has a good sense of humour and doesn't take things to seriously.

Steve Irwin has his revenge.

That is pretty strange though.

Here are some quotes from the globe and mail article this morning...

Quote:
"I don't think there is anything innocent that would be able to kill that many rays in a tank of that size," he added.
Quote:
Officials said yesterday they don't think hand cream, nail polish or contact with jewellery is to blame, but that the introduction of even a tiny amount of toxin might be. There are surveillance cameras around the exhibit, but they don't monitor the entire tank area and staff didn't report seeing anything suspicious on Sunday.

I hate to go completely off topic: If you watch "Clerks" snowball has a completely different meaning...

(as for the BBQ; I don't think there's enough meat on them...)
