Default Departures

Does anyone else watch this show? I've been compulsively watching for the last year or so. (i've seen some episodes two or three times)

Its a travel show that follows two guys and their camera man that leave everything behind to travel for a year. They are into season two now, you can purchase season one online.

Its on today (sunday) at 5:00, and again at 8:00. They will be travelling to Iceland.

I think the camera guy won some awards for work on that show. I think it's why it works so well. My buddy is right into it, and we watch the PVR during breaks in the Flames games. it's pretty cool to see where they go, but it's the camera work that me gets all hot and bothered.

To me the thing that stands out is the friendship that they share, but I agree the photography is stunning. The show wouldnt be the same without Andre's sublime direction.

I'm supremely jealous of these guys and envy of their smarts. I wish I were 25 again and had come up with this idea. Basically they got grant money to travel the world and turned it into a money making venture so they could travel the world for a second year. Well played guys.

They have also gone to some places I would like to visit but wouldn't have the nerve to right now. Best example is from this season where they went to Jordan. Would be an awesome place to go to but a little iffy right now.

EDIT: There is another similar show with three brothers called The Road Less Travelled.

Which Way To with the Eager Brothers? I like that one aswell. It is interesting because they always make honest efforts to appreciate the actual culture and people of the place they are visiting rather than just touring. Do interesting things that most people would never consider.

Yeah, that's it, I got the name backwards.

Watched their trip to Lapland tonight, quite the adventure.

I didn't know they were doing a second year. I'll have to check it out.

I liked their visit to Varanasi. Probably my favourite episode, which I think, also included a long, long train ride. And the episode where one of them almost died of altitude sickness high in the mountains of India. They were also trekking high in the mountains somewhere with that East Indian woman - a friend of a friend - and they crossed a border into Tibet or Nepal to see a shrine. There was also a good adventure in New Zealand - one of them bungee jumping in New Zealand without telling the other one was pretty funny.

They're a very odd couple. They seem very dissimilar on many levels yet somehow the friendship works.

Another good show that's passed recently is "Long Way Down" with Ewan McGregor and his pal motorbiking from Scotland to South Africa.

All those travel shows I dig. I was hooked on Lonely Planet/Pilot Guides/whatever they call it now for the longest time until they ran out of new stuff...and all the good "hosts" left.

About the only one I really can't seem to watch is "Word Travels". They go to some cool destinations but their personalities and writing styles grate on me so I typically can't watch more than a couple of minutes...unless like their episode on Dubai, it's someplace I am going to.

I caught this Iceland episode last night. First time I ever saw or even heard of the show. Seems pretty cool and I agree that the camera man is pretty damn good at what he does.
It seems that the show is less about the local people and culture and more about the local terrain. Pretty neat spin. Usually these travel shows focus on the local people and parties and strange cuisine. Departures had it's fair share of that, but proceeded to focus on the harshness of the island. When they were sitting in that boat and the piece of ice broke off, their reactions were...I don't know what word I'm looking for here... All I know is that that is a sound I want to hear.
And that caving expedition at the end was awesome.
Good show. I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

Couldn't agree more with a few on here about Andre's directing and camera work are really what makes this show amazing. Is it available in HD anywhere?
