That is actually very fascinating and really illuminates the vulnerability of societies. Usually we build things thinking they will last forever.

But, they did miss one picture:

This to me presents a unique opportunity rather than crying over old rubbish. Cities on the decline should take advantage of the government willing to wanker away dollars on any make work project. They should level as much as possible and either have natural parks or man made ones. Increase the quality of life for those who haven't moved out.

They can use this to their good if they use some brain power.

Rolling Stone had a good write up on Detroits decline. Buffalo, Baltimore, Phoenix are on the same trajectory. The most recent auto show there was pretty pimped down....Would rather be leveraged to oil than auto....

My GOD! Some of that architecture was amazing! That livingstone house, the first hotel and that theatre were beautiful! I can't believe so many incredible buildings are just being left to rot like that, how incredibly sad.

Looks like a freakin ghost town. Remeinds me of photos I've seen of chernobyl.

Hey look, it's every nightmare I had between the ages of 6 and 10:

This one is sad ... this theater looks incredible. I realize 40 years is a long time but I'm still surprised it looks this bad:

There are no old buildings in Phoenix, no sense of history at all, unless it is Ancient Hohokam they bulldoze it and build over the top.

Plus Phoenix is still in the top 10 fastest growing cities in the US. The Job is know as Joe Louis West from all the Detroiters that moved.

Detroit is a great city with some real ugliness injected here and there. Some of the ghetto areas are right out of the movies.

I don't think these photos really reflect the true reality of Detroit. I follow Urban Exploration, and these types of photos can be found anywhere from Miami to Vancouver to Toronto and far before this recession. 11 photos barely gives you the whole the picture.

What it does reflect is how little value society sees in older buildings in North America say vs Europe.

Here's a good slideshow though that better reflects today's issues.
