Tax Programs
Ummm I kinda have to do my 2007 taxes urgently and was wondering if I could still buy last years program?
Also what is the best program to do your taxes with? I have 2 rental properties and about 700 stock trades(UGH!) from the past couple of years.
Also I know it's too late to be able to file the 2007 electronically, but can I still Efile 2008's?
Thanx!

you cannot efile 2008's return until the 2007 return is filed and processed, as for a program get ufile since that is what the CRA uses for their volunteer program (when they do taxes for low income people)

Try Studio tax, it's free and it works. I used it 2 years in a row now. http://www.studiotax.com/en/download.htm

In the past I have used Quicktax and found it to work very well. This year for some strange reason I wanted someone else to do my taxes so I went to H&R and paid $350 which I thought was a bit steep. I was talking to someone over at Trans-Canada Tax in Mackenzie Superstore and they told me that they do self-employed messy type taxes like mine for $99. I think next year I will just go back to Quicktax as it is actually more time consuming having someone else do your taxes for you...
Your situation likely requires some outside help. If you are near the area, I would go talk to Livia @ Trans-Canada Tax in Mackenzie Superstore at $99 it is close to the cost of the software anyways. Ph#403-212-1223. If you are a do-it-yourselfer and self-employed read some Evelyn Jacks books as they are very informative!

On the tax topic, what are the pro's/con's of an actual accountant vs the H&R Block thing?
I used an accountant last year, but need to find someone new this year, and was wondering about H&R.

an accountant actually went to school while the people at H&R Block know about as much as you do. Stick with going to an accountant.

Deoxyribonucleic Acid, for example... sounds impressive, right? But have you ever seen what happens if you put something in acid? It dissolves! If we had all this acid in our cells, we'd all dissolve! So much for the Theory of Evolution, Check MATE!

I must say that this year filing my first taxes online (without an accountant) I found HRBlock's software to be very useful. You can use it for free to prepare your tax return and don't have to pay until you actually submit it. It costs 15.95 for the first family member and 10.00 for every additional one. You also have the ability to call them up with any questions. Obviously if you are experienced at doing your own taxes there are many other ways that are cheaper or free...but I would recommend this one from personal experience.

there are better resources than calling H&R Block for tax help... just call the government line there is reason it's there to help you.

I admit I have pretty basic tax returns for the most part, but I have to agree with cSpooge. We get one of those (approved) computer programs for whatever it is (20 bucks) and fill out our taxes that way. I think it gives you something like 5 or 6 returns for that price as well, so often we can split it with other people (e.g. say parents). We do fine - no problem submitting. Not for the last couple of years, but I've submitted my taxes by hand - i.e. filling out the booklet. That was pretty easy too. It walks you right through things, you fill out the form(s), but the numbers where they say to and you are good to go...
I realize I may not be getting every last tax credit, saving, etc, and I realize that I may have a bit simpler of a return* (I have university tuition to do with, got married/a spouse, will soon have moving expenses, dental/health stuff, etc), but I've done my taxes, got them in and and I've been fine. I think most people can do it they just don;t give themselves enough credit.
* - as for the star, I should say my 90-some year old Grandmother still does her taxes, and she has multiple shares of stock in different companies, RIFs, inheritance, capital gains, split stock or whatever, etc etc - you name it. It takes her some time, but she still files herself, by pen and paper.
