Default The City of Calgary is looking to ban ethnic malls.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/sto...s.html?ref=rss

Quote:
Community organizers are calling on people to contest a recommendation against "Asian malls" in Calgary as the city hosts the first of five open houses on its long-term plan for land use and transportation.

A report commissioned by the city on commercial and retail policy recommends that Calgary should "avoid the development of 'Asian' malls that cater only to a specific ethnic group."
Wow. The sheer political stupidity in my home city never ceases to amaze me.

I realize that every city, every province, and every federal government is cursed with having politicians of very limited intelligence or common sense... but we have consistently elected people like Rob Freaking Anders, Lee "blame the ethnics!" Richardson, and Jason "the gays can marry... as long as its to a member of the opposite sex" Kenney.

They are a small minority I am certain, yet they continue to give us a black eye on the image we want to portray to the rest of Canada, and the world.

Sorry, I get really frustrated when these stories come out.

What exactly makes a mall Asian? What degree of Asian is acceptable?

I used to live right near Pacific Place mall, which I'd say was pretty asian, but it has a Canadian Tire in it. I assume that saves it from being 'too Asian'.

What an idiotic proposal.

I thought that this comment made in the "Plan It" report was already apologized for? In any event I don't think that the "City of Calgary is looking to ban ethnic malls" as the thread title states here?

I sure hope this isn't the case. This would be the a fairly dump and regressive action to take.

Clearly the city should also shut down every Vietnamese restaurant as well.

Does this have to do with all the shootings among Asian gangs in the city lately? Is it a safety/reputation issue?

Another social engineering project by the 'Plan It' Calgary crowd. Yuck!

Probably planning on buying out those 'ethnic malls' for 11 mil a pop and then plough them over to make way for new pedestrian bridges!

Sounds like DESS got elected to City Council.

Maybe we could just keep all Asians in one part of the City and charge them a toll to leave their area.

Would we keep all the dogs in that area too?

Don't a lot of the asian restaurants close themselves by violating health codes?

This is a brash move though on the whole, I can understand that no one should feel a place is only for certain people but yeah I mean Pacific Place Mall, change the Canadian Tire to Asian Tire and maybe it crosses the line??

Well it was found in a report prepared for the city by a consultant. However, the way the city handled the situation makes them look like a bunch of clowns. I mean instead of coming right out and apologizing for the comments in the report and explaining what their actual take on the issue is, they mysteriously delete the comments from the report online and then tell the news it was taken out of context. The city representative I saw on the news was being very confrontational with the reporter and telling her very frankly that the report was over two hundred pages long and that she should read the thing before reporting on it. So the reporter obviously read the thing before finishing her story and comes back with four or five parts of the report that contradict what the rep was saying. Seemed like the rep had very little media training.

Biggest issue I have is the city spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a report like this prepared from an out of province consultant. Let's keep our tax payers money in the city and in the hands of consultants that have a clue about the culture of our city. City hall will never get it.
