Staying in Calgary, what should we do?
This is for those people who aren't going anywhere anytime soon. What the H E double hockey sticks is there to do in this town, anyway?

You need to give some guidelines as to what you are looking for. How old are you, what is your gender? Replies could be anywhere from retirement fitness groups, to bridge clubs, to bars to hang out in, to museums, to shopping, to employment, etc..

For a real thrill, don the kevlar and head out to one of Calgary's many Asian restaurants. If the exotic cuisine doesn't fill you up, the fear of untimely death surely will!

I've often wondered this, or what I would recommend to a tourist who came to Calgary to visit. I've got nothing, I'm not sure what attractions I would recommend inside the city.

The wife and I spent some time a few summers ago trying to do all the touristy stuff around town. Calgary Tower. Calgary Zoo. Heritage Park. Etc.
Once you've spent time doing all that stuff over again, then you can have an informed opinion on whether there really isn't anything to do in this town.

I get a little tired of people complaining that there is nothing to do in Calgary. Sure we're not New York or London, but we're not Regina or Balzac either. If you can't find anything exciting or new to do you're probably not trying too hard.
(Not saying the OP was complaining, just my feelings on the subject)
As far as 'what is there to do,' yeah we need more information. What are you're likes and dislikes?

I was thinking we need an ongoing 'Calgary events' thread, for people to give recommendations for things to do, upcoming concerts, plays, galleries, restaurants, etc., and reviews of these things as well.

Maybe you're boring?
And Balzac is minutes form Calgary yes, but I was talking on it's own merits, not Calgary's.

Maybe I have lived here for way to long (26 years) but I agree with those that have said that Calgary is boring.
There really isn't much to do in Calgary (keyword: in calgary... mountains don't count) during the winter... as we have 6 - 7 months of winter that takes up most of the year.
The summers are nice... but way to short.

Bah, I've lived here for 30 and I don't find it boring.
I mean any place you're going to get used to and have to find new things to do. And any place is going to seem a little stale to new places you've never been to.
But if you live in a city of 1.1 million people and can't find anything to do, well then I feel sorry for you. (well I don't, I just don't understand you)

I'm curious as to what people who say that Calgary is boring think would make it more exciting.
While I admit that Calgary isn't the most exciting place in the world, I wouldn't call it boring either. There's lots to do if you're willing to look for it. I think the problem is that most people are just lazy, and expect fun things to find them.
There's constantly bands playing, art shows, plays, outdoor activities, festivals, etc. going on. Or you can make your own fun... go skating, go for a walk/run through any of the numerous parks here, go to a pub and pound a few back with some friends or meet strangers.
Seriously, anyone who thinks Calgary is completely boring is probably just not willing to open their mind up a bit. Go try something new. Pick up a copy of FFWD, there's tons of random stuff to do in there.

Go support the arts, I heard they need help in this city. We've got the philharmonic, many theaters big and small (I especially like the Grand that opened up a few years ago, they always have interesting stuff there, one yellow rabbit and lunchbox is fun too!), several museums again big and small.
Don't like arts, go watch some sports. I'm pretty sure everyone here loves the Flames. Flames too expensive for you, go see the Hitmen. Shoot, the Mac's Midget tournament is around now isn't it? Go watch the NHL'ers of the future.
Don't like watching sports? Go play them. We've got curing rinks and hockey rinks indoors if it's too cold outdoors. Golf domes, soccer domes, indoor swimming. Hit the Talisman center and play basketball, badminton, volleyball or any court sport you like.
Go see a movie, either big hollywood production, or artsy film downtown
Feel like sitting on your lazy ass, hit the pubs and meet someone new. Go support original music at many of the music bars and lounges. Go to a dance club and get freaky. Try a new restaurant. Go shopping downtown.
For the nerd, joining a gaming club. Pick up a parks and rec pamphlet and see all the sports and games clubs you can join.
Heck, volunteer some time if you truly have to much.
Winter can make us feel a little trapped and isolated, but once you get out of the rut and start thinking a little there is a TON of things to do.

I've been here for the past 29 years, and the best things for me are the restaraunts. Everything else (aside from the outdoors of course) is pretty meh, if we are talking culture. One Yellow Rabbit theatre can be very good if you pick the right show. The occasional Flames game is not too bad. The zoo is pretty good. The museums/galleries are woeful.
