Summer Slo-Pitch League/Team
EDIT: June 2/08
With the season well underway, we are having a great time. For those of you who missed out, send me a PM and we'll get you on the list for next year, and on the substitute list for this year.
This was so successful, we might try to organize some fall and winter sports if there is interest, so send me your suggestions.

I played for the first time in one this past summer with my (now ex-) girlfriend's work and loved it, so I am looking to get onto a new team. I used to play ball as a kid and I really want to get back into it.
The real reason I started this thread was to find out if we wanted to make a CP team? Depending on the league you join, I'm sure you need a certain number of players from the fairer sex, so female CP members join up! Also male CP members ask your lady friends! Anyone have any good suggestions as to a fun league to join?
For guys and gals- if you are shy to join because you think you won't be good, WHO CARES! We all just want to have a good time so join up anyway. There can never be too many people since sometimes people will have other commitments, and also how can you get better if you don't play?
Send me a PM if you are interested, or reply in this thread.
Hopefully the CP Slo-Pitch Team:

I've wondered how you get on a team in the City. Looks like this might be a good place to start. Count me in.

I used to play every year until I transferred to the U.S. with work. I haven't played in the 3 years since I've been back in Calgary and I've missed it. I'd be in for sure and I should have a decent female to play as well.

Call Softball Calgary.
They will have a list of Softball Calgary/Softball Cananda sanctioned leagues looking for teams as well as teams looking for individual players. You should be able to find placement no matter what level of player you are when ball season rolls around. This is one of the safer ways to go about things as leagues have to be in good standing with the organization.
I've heard too many stories of pub leagues etc that shut down mid-way through a season and people don't get money back. Or non-sactioned leagues that simply hope no one else is playing on a diamond. Through softball calgary a league must pay for the diamonds they use and they get a permit to use the diamonds. You also tend to get good diamonds to play on (i.e Renfrew, Shouldice, Glenmore etc..) I think they also provide member players with insurance in case of serious injury. Plus if you are one of the better league teams you get to participate in the city championships. It does cost an idividual player more but in my experience it is more than worth it.

I'd be up for this, depending on where in the city the league plays.

Pay more for the affiliation, but you do get the best diamonds in the city, and access to the city championships.

Yep I edited that into my post to reflect it does cost more. It's worth it as not only do you get the best diamonds you are offered another level of protection against shady leagues.

I think our league fees (CMSL) are 1750 or so. I imagine that is the highest in the city or close to. However I think it is likely the highest level of play also, albeit in the first division.
I also look at leagues in the 800 or 1100 range and feel jealous. On the other hand we have well maintained fenced diamonds with umpires who are reliable. Decent prizes as well.
Have played in Rocky Mountain (SW), Lightning (SE) and some pub leagues, and all have positives and negatives; but I am happy with CMSL (SW).
I would not recommend CMSL if this is a more recreational team, even the lowest division is quite good.

edited the sign up list but we still need ladies! I just assumed everyone is a guy because no one specified they aren't. Come on ladies, this will be a rec league thing and it's just fun to get out on a summer evening and hang out while pretending to play ball!

I could likely pull in a lady or two, if we cannot find them amongst CP's ranks. Again would depend upon day and area of city.
