Default CONCACAF Champions League (soccer) - Montreal Debacle

Just finished watching this on CBC tonight.

Montreal Impact filled the Olympic Stadium a week and a half ago, and a somewhat improbable 2-0 win against Santos from Mexico in Concacaf Champions League Quarter finals.

Tonight, down 1-0, then Montreal comes up leading 2-1 at half with typical Mexican/South American defending (ie none).

Home and clear, right? With the away goal rule, a 4-1 lead, and Santos had to get 4 goals in the second half to advance...guess what?

2 goals midway through the second half....things looked ok, as much as the Mexcans were coming at them. But, the pressure was too much 2 goals in the 4 mins of extra time. 5-2 Final..5-4 aggregate.

Really hard to belive that a team can choke that away in 45 mins. One way traffic, but with all their subs, one would figure the subs brought in would be better defenders, or, be fresh enough to take one Mexican defender on and get a finishing goal.

I mean, Montreal is a USL team, but come on, that was embarassing as a soccer fan/former player to watch. Something horrible going on with Montreal pro sports the past 4 months.

Thats pretty tough, I only saw the highlights but the other side of south american defending (none) is that everyone is attacking because they know they have to score goals in order to advance.

Pretty tough choke though.

I watched the game last night too and yeah it was a brutal, embarassing 2nd half by the Impact. Still though you have to look at the bigger picture, the whole road to the quarterfinals was great and nobody ever expected the Impact to get that far. I doubt Toronto FC would have made it as far as Montreal did... also getting over 55,000 fans in Olympic Stadium for the first leg of the quarterfinal is a huge moment for Canadian club soccer, that unfortunately was largely overlooked by the media outside Montreal.
