Default Converting Video Files from Sony Camcorder (HDR-CX7)

Good Evening,

My wife and I recently welcomed our first little into the world and were given the above Sony camcorder as a gift. After downloading the videos to my desktop I have found it’s tough to find many players to play the videos. I did some reading and think this do to files being Sony specific videos files( AVCHD/MSTS). Just wondering if anyone else has ran into the same problem and found a good conversion software?(ie MPEG2 etc) to make the videos easier to play and email to friends.

My apologies for the generic explanation I'm not very tech savvy...any advice would be much appreciated!
