Cop Who Shoved Cyclist Fired by NYPD, Faces 4 Year Sentence
The power of youtube!
Quote:
NEW YORK - New York City police say an officer seen in a YouTube video knocking a bicyclist to the pavement during a protest has been kicked off the force, although his lawyer says his client resigned.
Police officials say Patrick Pogan was dismissed last week. He was suspended last year after pleading not guilty to criminal charges of filing false paperwork.
Quote:
Pogan had arrested Long, saying the cyclist blocked traffic and steered his bike into an officer, but charges were dismissed after the video appeared on Google's YouTube site.
He'd better have a lawyer as there is going to be a very expensive lawsuit over this one - and rightfully so. I like the end of the media interview where the reporter actually notifies tax payers of the anticipated lawsuit

Why am I not surprised you're defending the cops action because "it was only a critical mass cyclist"? You seem to be insinuating that they are somehow less than human and deserve what they have coming to them....

Hahaha, oh you...
I know a number of critical mass bikers and I hate their self-righteous, wanna-be revolutionary, spoiled middle class attitudes just as much as the next guy.

I can see why the cops don't like critical mass cyclists at all as they tend to shut down traffic cork side roads and ignore the traffic laws. But the cops actions in this case were stupid and he obviously doesn't have the temperament to be a cop.

Which is all well and good.
Except they're full of basically what Peter described along with some hardcore radical environmentalists and the ones that I've met are often full of intention towards antagonizing the cops. The original idea was fine but their execution is brutal (probably IMO to being hijacked by troublemakers).
I was invited and went to one when I lived in the UK and it was basically people yelling self righteous abuse at motorists, deliberately cutting them off, going as slow as possible (alloted time for their cycle), stopping at green lights en mass so they could invite police arrest. Basically obstructing traffic.
I can see how the cops get pissed off with them as that (from my experience) is a lot of individuals intentions. Nonetheless, doesn't excuse the cop's behaviour.

I was in Seattle during the ride in 2007 and I saw a group of cyclists attack a motorist who had totally accidently cut off a couple them when pulling out of a parking lot. This was after they saw him pulling out and purposely sped up to get in his way. They broke a few of his windows and scratched the side of his car up pretty good.

This pisses me off. I'm a cyclist weather permitting and even sometimes not, but I accept drivers as they are.
I don't round up a bunch of my bra burning, organic fruit growing, pot smoking, enviornmentalist neanderthals to ride their POS Crappy Tire bikes down Macleod Trail in the buff during rush-hour. Especially not in a place like Calgary where we have an amazing bike path system. Not to mention with the advent of GPS...I say people plan better and safer routes rather than bitch about something that weighs two more tonnes than you.

frightening. good to see it all got sorted out the way it should but if it wasn't for the cameras rolling that cyclist would likely have been fined/locked up as it would have been his word against the cop's and we all know who the courts would have sided with.
I have no problem with CM cyclists..but I am not suprised that someone else would take a run at one..I wonder if something was said? Can't really tell by the video.
CM happens here in Vancouver the afternoon of the last Friday of the month...I feel for the motorists who get stuck in that circus...WHAT I don't understand..is cyclist have whole streets dedicated to them in Vancouver (7th/8th ect)...so for the most part there is no need to cycle on major roads in this town...
They talk about respect...but the respect goes both ways..

You can tell by the video that nothing was said because you can't hear him say anything. The cop picked that guy out of the crowd and lined him up for 40 yards.
He deserves to go to the slammer. I hope he has a wonderful time.
