Default Photo Radar at Traffic Lights [MRG]

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...434f5a&k=26841
The Alberta government introduced legislation Tuesday that permits photo radar to be installed at intersections where red-light cameras are already in use.

Bill 49, the Traffic Safety Amendment Act, would incorporate changes that allow for "Speed on Green" photo-radar enforcement in Alberta's major cities, including at more than 40 Calgary intersections that have red-light cameras.
So if you run a red, you get a ticket. If you speed up to beat the light, you get a ticket. 4x4 will love this one...

What a gigantic pile of horse crap. I don't even know where to begin. I was just fuming the other day about slamming on my brakes at an intersection on Blackfoot. 70 or 80 speed limit and no warning lights (save the stale flashing hand) to inticate the light will change. Of course there is a red light camera (SB blackfoot @ 42nd). I elected to hammer the brakes because there was nobody behind me. If there was a truck (as is REALLY FRICKEN COMMON ON BLACKFOOT) I'd have hammered the gas. If I got a ticket for that, I'd be jumping the counter at the ticket office and ramming it down someone's throat.

I'm with 4X4 here. Fataing stupid. If you get the blinking hand as a warning, or blinking green before it goes green, fine.

For roads with speeds over 60k there should be warning lights to let you know that it is changing.

They might as well just get it over with and pass a law requiring mandatory GPS in all vehicles so they can send us a ticket each and every time we exceed the speeding limit, because that's where all this electronic surveillance is heading.

When that happens, give me a call. I'd love to represent you when you challenge the law and when you are charged with assault

I still find it odd that bigger cities such as Vancouver and Toronto don't even HAVE photo radar....but yet here we are attaching it to red light camera's.
What's next?

For anyone interested, here's the text of Bill 49 introduced yesterday: http://www.assembly.ab.ca/bills/2007/pdf/bill-049.pdf

You pretty much have to have a copy of the Traffic Safety Act with you to compare how things are with the proposed changes.

And here's the transcript of Bill 49's introduction:

Traffic Safety Amendment Act, 2007
Mr. Johnston: Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I request leave to intro-duce Bill 49, the Traffic Safety Amendment Act, 2007.
The bill will amend the Traffic Safety Act. Amendments are
required as part of Alberta’s traffic safety plan. Legislative amend-ments will define an intersection safety device which can be used to gather evidence dealing with red light and speeding infractions at intersections and the introduction of this evidence in court by affidavit – these changes will incorporate and mirror existing provisions for red-
light cameras – and also allow photocopies of
registrations for class 4 commercial trailers to be carried as an option to the original certificate.
The proposed legislation will affect evidence considered by the Alberta Transportation Safety Board respecting alcohol-
related
driving. It will also streamline the process of applying for a court review of board decisions and confirm the amount of deference the court gives to board decisions.
Finally, the legislation includes a liability cap for the vehicle leasing and sale industry and lenders who retain title to vehicles as collateral for loans where these businesses do not have possession of the vehicle.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
[ Motion carried; Bill 49 read a first time]

I think people are missing the forest for the trees. This issue isn't about safety or removing bad drivers off the roads(because there's no dem points taken off). This is strictly about the government raising money because spending increases year over year are much higher than revenue increases. The gravy train in Edmonton is threatening to come to hault if new revenues aren't found. Royalty Review = More gravy (I'd actually despute they'll collect less revenue than otherwise and their finance guys don't understand economics, but the thought behind it was to collect more money), Photo - Radar/Red Light tickets = More Gravy, Teachers Annoucement = Vote buying to resolve an issue that might have worked in the Liberals favor in the event of a spring election. It's all political. If we let them get away with this in the end we'll have a police state that isn't interested in locking up real criminals but rather make our police force glorified tax collectors because they're too chicken to try to increase taxes. If they had to do that then the merit of their spending practices would actually be called into question. This way they can throw out an airy fairly rationale as to why they're doing it and blame anyone who questions the financial side of it as being uncaring for Albertans.

What a load. People are going to be so concerned now about their speeds and status of the light at intersections that they will pull their attention away from things that really matter, like the surrounding cars and pedestrians.

I can't wait to see how many tickets these things will hand out. Will be way more than the usual photo radar van. I wonder if they will have each intersection marked with a sign stating the photo radar, or better yet have one of those LED signs that give you a readout of your speed in advance of the intersection.

I don't think anyone is missing the fact that this is just a cash grab. That's pretty obvious.

Well maybe the government shouldn't take on a stupid amount of debt....like say the unfunded liability on the Public Teacher's Pension plan...but that's a WHOLE other issue.

This won't affect 95% of the CP posters, since the majority on this site never speed, nor talk on the cell phone while driving either. In fact, I think most on this site keep their hands on 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock at all times and don't listen to music so it doesn't distract them while driving

I am still wondering why debt is needed to be taken on. They normally have 2+bil surplusses.

Strange that teachers dont even know how to run a properly funded pension plan, personally it makes them all look like idiots that the government has to run to the rescue like this.
