Just buy source and skip 1.6.. You need to load steam to play online. Steam will also patch your game once its installed.

I just can't get up the drive to play CS since the end of beta 7.
Everyone who says CS:S is too easy obviously never played Beta 4/5 vs v1 or later

I have steam and have other games running on steam. Went through this process downloading it at least three times and have got nowhere.

That's bizzare.
I'd send Valve an email. They're usually pretty quick to respond to user difficulties.

1.6 is so sterile, godforbid you'd want realism. I laugh at the idea source is easy.
I've played since 1.2 and I thought 1.6 got stale.

I recently started playing CS (1.6) again and boy did I forget how fun this game is. Seeing the green +300 in the lower right corner brings about a real illogically great feeling. Bonus great feelings when you get it via nade kill.

A buddy of mine from Ultima Online who lived in California ended up being the #1 rated X Box Counterstrike player for a few years running, FlatFeet was his game handle I think for CS, anyway, we used to play together in 1.6 to try and help me out, it was sick, burst AK head shots across the screen etc.. and he could pick out cheaters a mile away. Basically 1/3 1.6 server we played had at least one cheater, some more blatant than others.
Take it with a grain of salt, but it was enough for me to call it quits, it isn't fun playing against hackers. I picked up CS Source a few years ago and I find there is a lot less cheating, a bit more easy mode, but still very much the same old game that we all love to play.

for what its worth, there's lots of cheating in all those games. once you see the community that is behind it, you realize how easy it is.
there will always be a big divide with the people who liked source and those who didn't. i didn't move over to source for well over a year after it was released. but then i finally embraced the course games and realized that their differences made them a slightly different game. i think the problem most people have is that they prefer 1 way over the other and want the other version to be just like the one they like.

Any decent player can tell whos cheating. If there is no plausible way the guy knows where someone is yet constantly makes the clutch kills than you can draw a fairly educated conclusion. One way I tell is by how ancient the steam id of the player is. If the guy has a steam id in the 10s of millions and is playing like a vet, chances are hes not 100% legit.

So I asked one of my sons about this again last night. Did you download this straight from Steam? Ahhh no. Well that's what you told me yesterday. Well it brought up the steam account when I put the disk in was his reply.
Anyway I got him to uninstall the whole shebang. Then start over by following your advice. Wasn't done by the time I went to bed last night and I didn't check this morning so we will see if that solves the problem(though now I have a bigger one--see my new thread).

Yea. But somewhere along the lines they changed some of the item list numbers, so when I fire up CS for a yearly game, I always end up with the wrong stuff!

I hate reinstalling CS or CS:S since I always forget to disable the stupid GUI menu and it messes me up :<

How do you turn off that menu? I miss the text based buying menu of CS old.
And CS Source is fine. Back in highschool, I played competively in a clan but that was like a decade ago and I really don't care anymore. CS is fun to randomly play every few weeks and Source is perfectly fine for that plus the graphics are much better.

the best cheaters are the ones you never think of. sure there are idiots that use speed hacks and zoom across a map and are detected in 5 seconds. there are idiots that use aimbots and head shot people all the time and are detected in 5 minutes. but there are people who actually hack responsibly and will die at stupid times just to throw people off. there are people that will even toggle the aimbots on and off as they shoot to make it look random.
you don't have to have a 88:3 kill/death ratio to be a cheater.

I know but there is still ways to tell. I get hack-cused all the time because I can throw down some exceptional scores. Some people are just really talented. You cant think everyone hacks. Besides I enjoy playing cheaters. Makes the game a lil more challenging.

Exactly.
I always equated playing hackers to playing the computer on Nightmare.
