Plane crashes in suburban Buffalo, NY; 49 killed
Quote:
A plane crashed into a house in Clarence Center, a suburb of Buffalo, New York, on late Thursday, according to authorities.
Local media reported that the plane was Continental Flight 3407 from Newark, New Jersey, carrying 48 passengers, according to the FAA.
The plane went down shortly after 10 p.m., hitting a home and bursting into a fireball, according to New York State Trooper John Manthey. The wreckage from the plane is still smoldering.
The accident took place about seven miles from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

I think the odds of back to back plane crashes on the same airline is pretty remote. Besides it was a turboprop Dash-8, not a jetliner.

I wouldn't be worried at all.
I think that this crash was more the fault of the airplane, and not the fault of the airline. The Q400's seem to have a bad track record:

Oops, I guess I should have read the article first, eh? I had no idea it crashed into a house. Crazy.
I was afraid of flying before, but hearing stuff like this just terrifies me. Really sad.

Ernest Hemingway (with his wife?) was in two plane crashes within 48 hours.
Don't know if planes are any safer today than they were back in the 1950's (1954?)!? I think you'll be okay though....
Sad though, those Q400's are supposed to be great gliders....

Apparently the plane is brand new as well, just delivered last year.

Its likely weather had something to do with it.
It was a Dash 8 prop.
Its to bad for CO, they are easily the best managed of all the airlines in the US.

I recently read a book called Outliers and one of the subjects in the book was the horrible safety record that Korean Air used to have. At one point the book went into great depth about all the things that had to go wrong to cause one of their airlines to crash. There were about seven or eight mistakes that needed to be made for a crash to even be a possibility.
Plane crashes are big news because they happen so rarely. I know when I'm flying, my first reaction to turbulence is, "Oh crap! We're going down!". Well maybe not that bad but the reality is that there's no safer way to travel. Planes are EXTREMELY safe in the air. It's a far safer way to travel then by car.

It's a lot more likely you'll die in a car accident than in an airplane crash. nobody really worries about driving though.

Probably because you have control or at least some control in your car. You have no control or have no idea what is going on in a plane.

I know that is my biggest fear... when you are in a plane seat you are pretty much defenseless to whatever is going on around you.
I never used to be scared of flying... I actually loved it. Belive it or not, a plane I was in going to Boston, MA was once hit by lightning and I thought it was the greatest thing...
Then I was travelling back from India with the family and we took off in the middle of a storm... the plane kept falling 200 feet at a time and I honestly thought I was going to die. The plane ended up landing ok in our final destination; but mentally I have never been the same since when it comes to flying.
