Disabled man tortured for weeks in Hamilton house of horrors
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../National/home
Quote:
HAMILTON — Insects cover the walls and a horrible stench fills the air inside the Hamilton apartment where for more than three weeks a 22-year-old man, described by police as trusting and vulnerable, was held captive, beaten, burned and sexually abused.
The man was said to be near death when a chance discovery by police led to his rescue Sunday. He had allegedly been lured to this third-floor apartment in Hamilton's Corktown neighbourhood in January.
|
Quote:
Supt. Stewart said the victim has a mental disability, but lives on his own.
|
Quote:
A dog-eared notebook contained a list of house rules, which included: Do not touch anything without permission, no overnights – checkout time is 11 pm, if you visit you come alone, and a set of special “toking rules,” which said, “Do not ask. If we are going to share, you will know.”
|
Absolutely abhorrent. I have a feeling there's going to be even more shocking details to come out of this later based on the last quote. Almost sound's like they were trying to re-create "Hostel"

That's just disgusting. What the hell? That ex-boyfriend should have busted more than some windows.
Sounds like a bunch of idiots who are easily influenced by things around them trying to re-enact junk. You have to be seriously messed to do something like this...

Ugh, this is nothing like Hostel.
Why does everyone play the hollywood card? Can't we just accept that some people are messed up?

Its in everyone's inherent nature, a dark thought a streak of sadism, maybe the gentle thought of murder.
Some are just better at controlling it then others.

Exactly. I always laugh when people argue that movies or video games, etc., are responsible for stuff like this because they have their cause and effect backwards. Movies and games are driven by mankind's interests and desires. They don't create them.

Agreed.
They wouldn't have made Saw 5 if 1, 2, 3, and 4 were not successful.

wow. I've always been fascinated at how some people can get that messed up. How do you derive pleasure from torturing a mentally handicapped person? You have to wonder if you can rehab somebody that damaged.

I've always found this mentality fascinatingly hilarious. If it was a regular guy it wouldn't be as bad would it? Perhaps not as much 'fun' either?

I wonder if fun has anything to do with it. I suppose it would make sense that the victims in these sorts of crimes end up being handicapped in some way because an able body able minded individual would fight back more, not because the attackers prefer them to be handicapped. Just assuming of course.

I wasn't trying to blame this as an active immitation of the movie. It just looked like they seemed to have a notebook about 'house rules' implying that they might have been bringing friends/acquantences into their place to torture this dude, kinda a degree or two seperation from the plot of hostel.
I agree fully with the notion that with or without movie/TV/video game violence in our society there would be whack jobs such as these doing these types of things regardless. In no way shape or form am I trying to imply that a movie/TV/video game caused/inspired/or even drove them in any way to do this. I think you and Boblobla mis-interpreted me.

If it helps Cowboy89 I completely got what you did there. Although as I didn't write to back you up at all I suppose it doesn't help in any way. Sorry about that.
In a similar vein I'm starting a book tonight about a crazy serial killer that created a hotel of horrors back in the 1890's. I liked the idea of it because there does seem to be a notion that media creates these sorts of things.

I think it can be a chicken and an egg type thing. Art immitates life, and the movie hostel was supposedly based on something happening/rumored to have happened in Thailand where poor people were sold by their families to organized crime units to be murdered for sport by underground wealthy tourists.

Have you seen Hostel II? The female character who tortures and kills the virgin female character(can't remember her name, sorry) is based on a real life historical figure....Elisabeth Bathory, otherwise known as the "Blood Countess" who thought bathing in the blood of virgins could keep her young.

Yuppers, as messed up as art (for lack of a better term, maybe I should just say media) is, it'll never be bad as real life. If anyone thinks that media or art has created more problems, I'd flattly disagree. Sure, there may be a few (very few) people who get an idea and act on it, but they could get that from anywhere, and for all we know, the art or media might be providing a release or convincing other people NOT to act on their impulses as well.
BTW, that scene was kinda hot,

Yup, they also used to pose servant girls in their court yard during the winter and douse them with ice cold water in the hopes that they would freeze in their poses.
She left most murderers in her dust as she supposedly documented 612 murders in her diary.
I did a term paper on her in high school.

Yeah she was fascinating. Did you read "The Blood Countess": by Andrei Codrescu? He supposedly is a descendent of hers, he usually writes literary stuff and had a spot on NPR here. Hmm figures you would do a term paper on someone like her , you boxcar hobo murderer

I read the blood countess a while ago.
I did the term paper because I thought it was amazing that everyone involved with her was tortured and executed except for her husband who died in battle, but she was walled into her prison and lived for 3 years and the legend said that she was still incredibly gorgeous.
She was sick and depraved and sadistic and she didn't do it for power, she did it for pure pleasure, she was a child of her own id.
I also did a paper on Vlad Tempest and the heads of the Spanish inquisition. My teachers thought I was too enamored with evil when I was in high school.
