Mine doubled as well, as did gas.
I think there were a few more days on it than usual, the price was higher, and the furnace ran longer (almost non-stop for a week when -40)

Mine was like a 40 day billing period, so that makes it automatically 33% larger. Plus that cold snap was pretty long.

It seems like everytime I go online at enmax.com to check my balance they're updating or my info is simply not available. Hate their website and the paper bill always shows up well after the 1st of the month and after I take care of all my bills.

Yeah, you aren't the only one. http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=68777
As I said in that thread, I know my current Enmax bill is a good 1100 kw/h behind. So at least I know to expect a big bill soon.

Mine was as high as it was at the peak of summer, when the Airco was running full tilt.
Nearly double of last December...

Same thing here.
I didnt get a bill in December. I called Enmax and they said they were having billing issues. Got a bill at the end of January and it was huge since it was for essentially two billing periods plus it included the cold weather and the holidays which meant lots of electricity and gas usage.

It's been cold so both my electricity and natural gas have increased dramatically.
Expected this time of year.

The thing to look at with your Enmax bills is the date of the meter reading. The bill I just got that was printed on January 20th shows a meter reading date of December 9th.
So if they get a meter reading done before February 20th- my next bill will reflect about 2 months of usage.

I love Enmax.
They claimed I used 9 units of water in Oct when I first move in.
52 Units the November
and 11 in the December.
All 28-30 day readings.
Depending on how the bill I get in a few days is, enmax will likely be getting a very nasty call soon.

You all complain like you don't have a choice.

Really though- what are our other choices?
Direct Energy- worse than Enamx
Other providers require long term contracts.
Solar/wind power requires an initial cash layout comperable to buying a new car.

So for all the whining and complaining, it's really not that bad, then?

I think the only choice we have is to be more conservative on how we use power and natural gas.

Power rates fluctuate and frequently over the last couple of months the kilowatt/hour rate maxed out hence you're bill is going to adjust accordingly unless you locked in.
Isn't there the same potential for gas? If a plant or two are down, or the demand is way up, the rate increases for a time period?

When every available option in an idustry is a turd, it's probably time to look at who regulates the industry.

I worked at ENMAX and can tell you just a few things:
1-if you lock in to a rate, you have less fluctuation
2-their rates are based on price (determined by suppliers) plus profit (as defined by the City), so they can't really do anything about the rates
3-meter reading is intermittent at best (less when weather is terrible, like -35), so you will get fluctuation in your usage no matter what
4-when they don't read the meter, they estimate, but then 'catch up' when the meter is read...sometimes giving you an abnormally high or low usage for the month.
Unfortunately, that is the way it is. ENMAX is fairly open to change under it's current management, and you can certainly register your complaints with them. They may not change anything (but they might)..they will definately listen.
And the alternative (Direct Energy) is abolutley the GREATER of the two evils.

They always overestimate for me. I had a bill a few months ago that was about $35 because of the actual readings.
