Default AVG Anti-virus won't update! Help

Back to the gurus. I am trying to update the av on my xp machine.

When I update AVG it says can't update a .bin file is missing. I downloaded it again and reinstalled to no avail.

Any thoughts?

p.s. while get a mac would be a funny retort, my mac is working fine. The reason I bought it was so I did not have to futz with this crap. ah well.

1 - Start up AVG,click Update Now.
2 - The list of updates is shown in Popup, click on the more information link.A list of updates will be shown.
3 - Click on and save all updates in a file except the last one - http://downloadfree.avg.com/update/u7iav... - because this is causing the problem.
4 - Cancel the update and instead click on Tools > Update from Directory and go to the file where you saved the updates.Install these and AVG should be working properly again.

I found that same advice. Tried it but does not seem to work. Thanks though.

Worst case maybe a virus that's blocking the update? Check your hosts file.

+1. Also try finding an online scanner to scan your computer remotely.

Not to derail the thread but is avast free? I had it on my computer for 90 days, and now it tells me I have to uninstall it, or pay 60 bucks for a year.

Yes, it is free.

After 90 days you must do a registration type of process to be able to continue to utilize the software for free. I believe this registration must be re-completed every year (I could be wrong). Even though it seems annoying and pointless, I'd say that it is a very fair trade-off for a quality free app.

EDIT: Back on topic...

I like AVG and avast!; I switched to avast a little while back for similar reasons to you Titan, I believe, and have had no complaints since.

Just as a follow up after I loaded Avast AVG updated properly??? Maybe a bug was stopping AVG?

is there any good reason not to run both at the same time?

Yes, a virus, bug or malware app was probably the cause. Glad to hear that avast! helped fix things.

Actually, yes, there could be good reason(s) to not run both at the same time. The one obvious reason is that they will consume more system resources than necessary, likely slowing the rest of the computer down noticeably.

Another reason is that AVG and avast! could cross each other up if both real-time protection modes are running. This could potentially cause false positives on either side, system slowing or complete locking up, or in extreme cases, malware infiltration due to decreased protection caused by simultaneous incompatible scripts.

EDIT: If you want to, you could leave both installed and only have one of the two as your real-time agent. Personally, I'd just choose whichever one I prefer and be done with it, but some people like to have that fail-safe back-up application always available should the other one stop working. Either way, I recommend against running them both at the same time.
