Default Lower Mainland Shootings

Two more in the last 24 hours. Both appear to be gang related. One today the woman was with her FOUR year old son in the front seat, thankfully he wasn't injured.

Things are completely out of control in the lower mainland right now.

Yeah things are crazy here right now. And the shootings are happening any time of day, any place, from Langley to Kits.

Not sure if something has sparked some kind of all out gang war or whats going on. Matter of time before an innocent is hit.

The police have been a bit ridiculous asking members of community businesses to stop serving gang members etc. Seems no one in law enforcement really has a handle on these guys.

What is the YTD tally, and how does it compare to Calgary right now?

This will really get interesting as the economy worsens. With much of this being drug related and people having addictions and no money to pay for them...violence replaces currency.

I think it should be made a criminal offence to be in the Lower Mainland, under the age of 30, and driving Range Rover.

Don't know the total numbers, but these last couple of weeks in Van have been even worse to the couple of weeks around New Years in Calgary. Both cities are going crazy with gang wars right now.

LOL, I love Range Rovers and would absolutely drive one if it was in budget. I'm under 30 too, don't pass this law!

The article doesn't say the murdered woman was gang related. Lets hope she wasn't an innocent bystandard or target of road rage.

This map helps sheds some light on the lower mainland, tried finding a similar one to Calgary but couldn't. The list only includes actual homicides and doesn't list attempted shootings, like the one today.

Given that she was a 23 year old, who had a kid when she was 19, and yet somehow could afford to drive around what appears to be a brand new Cadillac CTS, I think it's safe to assume she was the benefactor of a GM going out of business sale, and not criminally involved in any way.

I think Vancouver is worse than Calgary at the moment, but its also got more people. No doubt some of the drug activity in each city is related too. I'm sure some groups operate in both cities and in Edmonton as well.

LOL, I didn't see those details. Likely a gangsta's girlfriend I guess. You know, if women as a whole refused to date gangsters, the entire problem would go away.
No young men would join gangs if they knew they're never get a girl again.

Ah ha ha ha... classic!

Ya, it's going nuts over there. When I used to live there the average citizen could feel safe since the gangs targeted each other. Now they're just blasting anywhere and everywhere. Brutal...

I could be wrong, but I've always thought the GVRD(Greater Vancouver Regional District) ended after Maple Ridge and Langley, while the Lower Mainland stretched out further to Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

The shootings around here are getting ridiculous, it's almost an everyday occurence now. Surrey's one thing(and not really that surprising), but for them to be happening all over the "Lower Mainland" is pretty scary.

That's some thick sarcasm. It really is amazing though that many people in Calgary have a tendency to point to immigrants as a major source of gang violence in the city. I mean, I'm sure the "Fresh off the Boat" and "Fresh off the Boad Killers" chose those names for ironic purposes.

I really think that the criminal code has to be re-examined in light of the gang violence that has really started to heat up in this country.

If your a known gang member or affiliated with a gang and you commit a crime with any kind of weapon its life with no parole, in other words the only way your getting out is on a slab. These gang members look at the short prison terms as a wetting, it makes them legitimate in the eyes of their peers.

If your an immigrant and your convicted of a gang related crime, then your deported that day, if your company doesn't want you back, we'll drop you off just outside of the border.

If its a gang related drug crime, then you take the normal sentence and double it.

We can try all we want to get these people out of the gangs, and that needs to continue, but these hard core gang members aren't going to change and chances are that they're going to take someone out with them, so the punishment has to be about setting an example and ensuring public safety over rehabilitation.

I would not want to be a young guy driving a high-end SUV in Vancouver these days....legit or not.
