Default Weird old sayings and phrases

There are a lot of weird old sayings that when used in today's context sounds very unusual. The ones that come to mind are "seeing a man about a horse" or "Gave up the ghost."

I'd often still use "gave up the ghost" just because it sounds funny. Obviously, the meaning behind it isn't, but whenever I do use that phrase ppl tend to look at me in confusion. Like, "looks like charlton heston gave up the ghost."

Can you think of any that's weird to you? Maybe it's something you use everyday, but never really considered how weird it is when used in today's context.

"You make a better door than a window" was one I heard a lot growing up. I was surprised when I had to explain it to my wife, I thought it was commonly used.

Rule of thumb = Old law meaning that you cannot beat your wife with a stick with a diameter larger that than your thumb.

Under that, and it's all good

"to boot".

As in a sentence like "she's smart, funny and gorgeous to boot".

What I wouldn't give to live in the old days... with abnormally large thumbs.

My Dad always used to say "as sure as God made little green apples"

Don't ask me why or what that meant.
