Class grades - What did you get?
So it is that time of year that grades are released. Be it highschool or Uni most people should be close to getting final grades in their courses. I know highschool isn't for another few weeks but did any of the U of C (or other universities) get their grades yet?
I only have one so far. Of the three course components for Phil 381 Philosophy of Mind I have gotten 2 grades.
I got 3/4 on my first essay and 3.85/4 on my second essay (GPA based grades if you know what I mean). So I'm sitting at about an A- with my final exam mark yet to come.
I think I did well in 439 Strategic Studies (poli sci) but not very well in 383 International Law.
Please only post poor grades I don't want to be shamed by my mediocre school abilities.

I had a .9 gpa in my first semester at the U of C. haha that is below a D. I guess my study habit, of not studying , did not translate well from hs to uni. hehe.

Hahaha, I took 439 about five years ago. Dr. Huebert was the instrutor, and we played Diplomacy and part of our final mark was how well we performed. Does he still do that? I hope so - one of the easiest classes ever!

I was just having the discussion last night that going from High School to Uni is like going from grade 6 to grade 12, while going to Mt Royal from high school is like going from grade 6 to grade 9.
My buddy, who only completed one course, if that, at Mt Royal was quite offended. I am not knocking Mt Royal, but wow are their courses easier than the U of C.
Going to Uni is a big step and I for one am proud that I have been keeping my head above water. It is not for everyone that is for sure. I really don't want this post to sound condescending but University is an entirely different entity than anything else, some people are better off going other places, doing apprentices, and that sort of thing.

Yes he does, yes I love that game, we lost horribly as Russia but only because Austria F'ed us over.
I should get an automatic 10/10% in that class for that activity, I thought I was very active.
The best thing about Huebert is that he is an insanely good prof yet gets a lot of stuff wrong. He frequently mispronounces the names of cities, treaties and agreements etc.
I missed a few lectures to go see NIN in Kelowna and when I told him why I wasn't going to be there he was so interested in my trip because he likes industrial music and feels the whole scene has gone downhill recently. One of his favorite albums was TDS. The best part is that this was all during one of the Diplomacy classes, he totally ignored the game for like 5 minutes to talk to me about NIN.

After my first year at the UofC, my GPA was 1.02. I partied way too much and didn't take my studies seriously. I got 3 C-, 2 F's, and 2 W. I would've been kicked out had I not withdrawn from those two courses. They only evaluate you after six half courses and with the 2 W's, I only had five. After my second year, I brought my GPA to a 1.51. Enough to qualify for Academic Probation. Can't beleive I ended up graduating, although it took me five years to get my BA instead of the usual four.
My high school grades were usually in the mid 70's, but my Math marks were always in the high 80's or low 90's. Been exempt from all my Math finals in junior high and high school (with the exception of Math 30 since that was a diploma exam).

I've been in University since the fall of 03 and still have another year left. After my first couple of years I got burnt out and had to take 2 years off just to regain my love for school. Now, like Photon said in another thread, I'd go forever if I could.

I've always been a high performing student, I really like school, I really like political science, but the wear and tear of going hard for 3 years plus a thesis just ripped me to shreds. I took some time off too. Now I can hardly wait to get back and start applying for an MA.
POLI 439 is an insanely great course. I think Huebert is pretty good, but as you said, hard to tell when he struggles with some hilariously basic words. Maybe he's dyslexic.
And the Diplomacy part was the best part of my university classroom experience. Our team played as the Austrians and our first move was to knock out the Russians. Some of the people that I knew on the Russian team actually stopped talking to me after that.

Well I think I got everyone beat. At one point in Mount royal I think I was at a 0.3* gpa or lower. I just never went ended up spedning too much time in Liberty lounge or at Stix (pool hall just down the street). This was about 4 years ago now
And now I sit on CP all day at work and when trying to study for courses for work, one track mind I guess and its focused on the non school stuff.
*not 100% sure of how accurate this number was, think it was lower like .27 they politely asked me not to come back to mount royal and the end of the year

Very true.
My brother studied civil engineering at SAIT finishing in the top of his class. When finished he decided to go the University route to get his degree. Lasted 2 months and dropped out as he found he was in way over his head. Found the standards and requirements quite higher.
Myself, i went the way of SAIT and studied business admin. Uni was out of the question for me as i didn't have the grades to get in.

Yeah, Uni is one of those things that can often make a person sound holier than thou, or like they are being conceited but I know a lot of people who just couldn't handle it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying if you fail at University you fail at life. My sister got frickin Ds in HS but did excellent in Uni, and I know of people who were the opposite.
Others I know are really successful at stuff like welding etc that require little academic schooling and lots of on the job learning that I would likely fail miserably at. To each his own for sure, University is not a good fit for everyone, and there are lots of other opportunities for people who aren't cut out for it. I certainly don't attribute going to Uni as being higher in rank than doing anything else, because you can still be very successful without it.

I received most of my final grades before Christmas, and my last one came in the other day. I go to UNBSJ, and got an A in ICS 3004 - Media Production I, B- in IT 1803 - Intro to Computers & Systems, C+ in POLS 2601 - Intro to Int'l Politics, and a D in SOCI 3214 - Sociology of Communication, though that mark will be changed, as my prof lost my second exam and just gave me a 0/30% on it. With the D, my cumulative GPA is 3.1, which I kinda hope to improve upon this term.

I agree 100% about what you're saying. We all have talents and abilities and that doesn't always take us the university route. A good buddy apprenticed as an auto mechanic and is quite sucessful at what he is doing. Another bud took a trade in the construction industry.

See I don't know about this. There's a tremendous amount of difference in the difficulty in the content going from grade 6 to grade 12, where as the content in university is not that much harder then what you see in grade 12. In my opinion in the amount of work and staying on top of it that kills people. Luckily I knew this going in so I ended up with a gpa of 3.7.

After two years off of school and transfering from ENGG to KNES I somehow ended up with an A average. It's hilarious to me considering I didn't study for Finals...

I'm starting to think that myself. For me, I'm doing my masters in electrical engineering right now (MSEE, for the thread - Two A's and a B, stupid probability I was sure I got a A-) but I wonder how much I really enjoy it and if I would have been better off just trying the trades. I went to university and did engineering, cause I didn't know what else to do and I was always good with numbers. I hate the idea of university lectures, I'm bored in class and for the most part, uninterested. We'll see how I feel after this thesis goes, I got 2 more semesters.

Personally I found going from highschool to university like going from Grade 12 to Grade 12, but I never tried to get top marks in either place so perhaps it is just easy to get B's and C's both places, but harder to get A's in University.

So anyone willing to share what they got?
Locke, I'm at least a little suspicious that our Den meetups might not take place if you've been placed on probation already.
