Default Dell Launches Inspiron Mini 9

Dell has officially entered the super awesome small mobile cheap laptop market with the launch of the Inspiron Mini 9 laptop. Starting as low as $349, this thing looks poised to knock the EEEPC and others off its perch atop the market.

Looks like they're not available on the Canadian Dell website yet, however.

It's there today. I am not salivating over it...although according to an Engadget article it does look easily modable so that may change things. I was a larged HD than 16gb.

It looks perfect for a school laptop. With USB flash memory being so cheap you can easily add another 8gb of disk for 40 bucks. Also, it comes with online storage. My biggest problem with it is maximum 1 gb of RAM, but I am a RAM whore and with it running XP a gig is probably enough that I wouldn't be pulling my hair out.

Sign me up for one, but not till my current laptop dies.

In fact, I am fairly sure that is what I have on my keys right now.

Ok, so my laptop battery is pooched, and with it gonna cost 300 bucks to replace just the battery I am considering one of these Minis. They don't have an optical drive, a feature I am sure I can live with, but I would like ot have some more RAM. The best I can figure since they don't have an option to upgrade RAM at time of purchase that it only has the slot for one DIMM. Can anyone else confirm my logic here?

Also I was thinking I would like to get an extra battery, since I am pretty brutal on them at school. However I can't find them for sale on the Dell site. Anyone know of any 3rd party vendors that might have one or is it pretty much not going to be available on such a new product?

my laptop crapped out on me (..ie...i cooked it) earlier this year so I've just been on my desktop since.

I just ordered one of these for school/in front of the tv browsing.

I'll post my impressions when it arrives.

Please do. I've been contemplating getting a second laptop for that kind of browsing too.

Rumours of integrated 3G on some US models.

More than just rumors of 3G, there is some thought that they will ship as a part of a 3G data plan, like a phone. Buy the plan, get the Mini-9 for $99 or free or whatever.

Interesting, eh?

That would be awesome.

i ordered it with the 16 gig HD (instead of 8...50 bucks extra, probably shouldve just bought an exterior 250 gig for 110 bucks), with blue tooth (additional 20 bucks) and one of the custom carrying bags (30 bucks). I hope to see it next week, but for whatever reason Dell quotes up to 15 days for shipping.

Pretty nice little machine. The Atom CPU is only supposed to draw a max of 2W, so it is the screen which will eat most of the power.

I personally would miss teh screen space, but I can definitely see the highly mobile crowd wanting one of these.

Solid State is up to 8 times faster, uses less power. Good upgrade for 50 bucks. Personally, I am more concerned about the lower number of total read/writes before the drive craters. Although with a 2-3 year lifetime on a laptop like this you probably wont be using it long enough to have to deal with that.

That's true for random reads, which is what 90% of everyday stuff is, but for larger files and sequential access (like movies) current hard drives are just as fast or faster.

Solid state is the wave of the future, but there are still hurdles before they will be come a true replacement for all applications. But with the way they have come on like gangbusters the past year, it may only be a few more years before rotational platters are obsolete.

Solid state uses about the same amount of power as a laptop drive in their current incarnations, believe it or not. Its quite amazing, actually, how optimized laptop hard drives are, you are looking at about 2.5 watts to run a standard 2.5" drive.

And although they haven't been in the wild long enough to really see how they will hold up, with modern wear levelling techniques, and the greatly increased read/write cycles available on current flash drives, you'd have to write to them continuously for years before you wear them out, in theory. I used to worry about this issue as well, but you are far better off just using the machine and not thinking about it, it's not going to wear out before the machine is obsolete. EMC is putting flash in their high end storage equipment, if its good enough for them, its going to be fine in a netbook.

Bump

Does anyone have one of these? Any comments? Dell has been selling them for $359 as part of their Boxing Day Deals, and my wife is looking into getting a portable notebook/mini for school.

Also, Dell used to have a stand in Market Mall (so you could see things in person), but I didn't see it the last time I was there... anyone know if this still exists (at Market Mall or otherwise?).

Thanks
