Laptop display is jumbled. *EDIT* Need a new Laptop. Advice
***************EDIT******************
So seems I need a new laptop PC. Looking for one that is ultra portable (thin and light), but still has a decent size screen (14") and an internal optical drive
Its primarily a work computer. Lots of the usual stuff - word processing, internet, e-mail, but a fair amount of graphics and image processing
what should i look for? A particular type or spec of display, AMD vs Intel, a particular chipset, longer battery life would be handy as well
prefer <$1000
Suggestions for a starting point. Thanks
************************************************** *****
my laptop was fine yesterday morning, i left it on while it was doing a virus scan, came back in the afternoon and the screen was all jumbled
I plugged it into an external monitor and the display was also jumbled
is my video card shot? can it be repaired or am i screwed?

If you do a reboot, is the initial text screwed?
Or only once you get into the OS?
With laptops, almost everything is integrated on the motherboard so when something hardware goes (like video/power) it means a replacement which is crazy expensive).

So it doesn't sound like a driver issue.
When you say, "including the windows load up screen", I'm wondering about even before that. When a computer initially turns on it usually starts the screen in a super basic text mode before it tries to start loading the OS (although some boot routines do it "silently"; without showing you anything). If your screen is screwed up even at the very first, basic point, then it is probably a hardware issue.

Its a Samsung laptop, so the first thing that shows when the power is turned on is the Samsung logo, and it is also jumbled
I guess i'm screwed

Yeah, if it happens on external monitor then you know it isn't the screen.
If it happens before the OS even has a chance to load, it isn't a driver issue.
The only thing I would say is perhaps a corrupt BIOS, but if you can't even get into the most basic screen then it sounds FUBAR.

I agree, a refurb Macbook would be about perfect.
Lenovo has some good small laptops as well, but they're a bit pricier.
I've had experience with the Dell XPS 1330 and I like it as well.

^^^ I literally just bought that refurbished macbook. The shipment arrived today actually. Can't wait to try it out when I get home tonight. I've never used a Mac before. Hopefully its worth it.

If you go with the refurb Macbook, I'd suggest also looking at these two upgrades:
2 x 2GB RAM sticks: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...16414(ME).aspx
(80 bucks to upgrade to 4GB of RAM)
320GB 7200RPM Hard Drive: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...21563(ME).aspx
(not totally needed, and you can go to a smaller size as well... but you'd be surprised how much a faster spinning hard drive can make a difference)
Keep in mind that the Macbook I linked will perform quite nicely as it is already. It's got everything you'll need in it, and you can also do the dual-boot thing if you still want to run Windows (nothing wrong with that, and it works flawlessly). These upgrades are only suggestions, but they are something that I would do. It's never a bad thing to have too much power!
Again, though... to be clear, these are not "must have" add ons. You should be more than fine with it as it is, out of the box.
