I went and saw Meet the Fockers last night and immeadiately following my buddy goes on about how much it sucked and that it wasnt as good as the original and blah blah blah......I aint defending the movie, it wasnt that good, I just hate people who see a movie and automatically compare it to something else similar. The director wasnt trying to make it the same the original, he was trying somehthig different with the same characters. And my biggest pet peeve came when I saw The Village in the summertime..........after we got out, a different guy was babblin how it wasnt as good as Sixth Sense and Signs and blah blah blah......THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT MOVIES!!!!!! Dont compare them because they are made by the same guy, I mean, do you compare ET and Saving Private Ryan because Spielberg did both of them......That just doesnt make sense to me and now I am whining so I will stop.
What do you guys think???? Do you know what I mean?????

You can't really make a value judgement without having something to compare it to, though. How can you rate a movie as good without using other movies to gauge what good is? You can say whether you enjoyed it or not, but even that enjoyment is coloured by your previous experiences with movies. The easiest way to make a comparison is to find something of a similar type and see how they stack up against one another.
As for your ET/Saving Private Ryan example, it really depends what you're comparing. If you said ET wasn't as good because it didn't have as good of fight scenes, sure that wouldn't be fair. If, however, you were to look at Spielberg's development as a director, it would be entirely valid. You could even compare them by your levels of enjoyment and still come up with an entirely valid opinion.
Bottom line is, though, you can't make any sort of value judgement without a point of comparison

I understand what you mean and, to some extent, agree.
But most of the time, the comparisons are valid. Agreed, nobody compares ET to Private Ryan just cause Spielberg directed it. And you're right, nobody "should" compare The Village with the Sixth Sense, because they are two different films. But so what if they do? As a director, M. Night Shyamalan should be motivated to improve on his first movie. In that case, a comparison would be of use to him.
But Meet the Fockers is a direct follow-up to Meet the Parents, with the same characters, and is essentially an extension of the first movie. I think that would warrant a comparison.
Personally, I though Meet the Fockers was better than Meet the Parents. Ben Stiller wasn't as big a loser in this one. It's too bad, because aside from movies like Zoolander, he'll never be able to escape the role he's stuck in.

I think it depends on the director, and what types of movies he makes. Whether or not you can classify him as an auteur, and whether or not his films have some sort of collective theme or unifying presence behind them.
For example, while it might be silly to compare "Rudy" with "Remember the Titans" (using examples from the sports movie thread) or "E.T." with "Saving Private Ryan," I have no problem with your buddy comparing Shyamalan's movies to each other, or comparing say, "Vertigo" to "North By Northwest."
Comparing movies with similar themes can provoke interesting discussion, but like you say, it doesn't apply in all cases.

I've heard from a number of people that The Village was a terrible movie. I think people go in with a certain expectation of what they think the movie should be, based on the director, or genre of movie. That's the worst attitude to go into a movie with. You're totally setting yourself up for dissapointment. Admittidly, The Village wasn't exactly what I expected either, but I actually thought it was pretty good. I loved the twist ending, and overall, I liked it far better than Signs.
I agree that Meet the Fockers was hilarious. A little different from the first (definitely cruder), but I laughed my ass off.

The village wasn't great at all but it was certainly better than any of the other M. Night Shamalyn (whatever his last name is). All the others really sucked, this one only kind of sucked.
More on topic though I think it is fair to compare his movies because they have the same sort of topics and themes.
I also think that it is okay to compare sequels to previous movies. Especially if it seems that the sequel was made soley to capitalize on the franchise/actors name and not as a independant movie with good entertainment points.
