CP Literature Draft - Workshop
A few CPers have expressed interest in a literature thread. From past experience, these drafts seem to work well with about 25 GMs and about 20 categories.
I could use lots of input here. Here are some suggested categories (more or less taken from amazon), and let us know if you would like to be a GM:
Comics and Graphic Novels
History
Travel
Science Fiction
Fantasy
Sports
Science
Religion/Philosophy
Biography/Autobiography
Non-Fiction
Mystery/Horror
Children's Literature
Cooking, Food & Spirits
Health/ Medicine/ Self-Help
Fiction/Novel - Wildcard #1
Fiction/Novel - Wildcard #2
Social/Political Science
Humor/Satire
Canadian
Music
Anthology/Short Stories

Don't take this the wrong way, since I am so down for a book draft...
But we can't even get through the first round in the Album draft.

I think it is moving along ok - we are getting 3-4 picks per day. I could use some suggestions on new books to read.

I'll agree with the notion of looking for new reads. I'm on board for this draft.
For some personal perspective, how about a category for a book that has actually impacted a person's life. Changed something about them... not a self-help book... Something like, I dunno, I mean we've all read something that has really knocked us on our ass, haven't we?
Obviously, we don't have to go into details of the change or whatever the impact was... but I think "Personal Impact" elevates a book beyond just "Favourite Sci-Fi."

I'm in. I may have a hard time filling out some of the categories, but my wife reads a ton so she can help me too.

I'm in. I don't know about categories like 'music'. Are there really 25 great books about music out there, and aren't most of these memoirs or biographies, anyway? Same with cooking.
Here's how I'd do the categories:
Canadian Lit
American Lit
European Lit
World (non-european) Lit
Children's Lit
Science Fiction
Fantasy
Trade fiction (mystery, horror, romance, crime)
Fiction - Wildcard
Non-fiction - memoir / biography
Non-fiction - scientific
Non-fiction - travel
Non-fiction - historical / political
Non-fiction - philosophy / religion
Non-fiction - writing / reading / language /communications
Non-fiction - wildcard
Graphic novel / comic book
Humour / Satire
Anthology / Short Stories
Picture-book (photo or illustration)
Pre-20th century

I'd like cooking to stay in the picture. I actually really like to cook and would be interested in that category quite a bit.

I'm interested, but I'd suggest keeping the categories down to under a dozen, and broad in definition. You're going to have difficulty appealing to the middle with a long and intimidating list of genres. Something like:
SF/Fantasy/Horror
Mainstream Fiction #1
Mainstream Fiction #2
Humour/Satire
Mystery/Spy
Graphic Novel/Comic
Non-fiction #1
Non-fiction #2
20th Century classics
Pre-20th Century classics
Wild Card Pick
I'd also suggest allowing 1 mulligan, where if someone has no pick for a category, they can sub in any other book they want as another wild card. For example, I've never read a graphic novel, so I would be greatly disadvantaged in that category.

People seem happy with octothorp's categories. I do like your idea for a "mulligan".

What is "trade fiction"?
Can we add coffee-table book to picture book?

I think we should add it to the album draft too, if people are getting stuck.
