Default Driving to Edmonton today

I am driving to Edmonton this afternoon, leaving around lunch time. I have heard that the roads around Red Deer are brutal. Anyone have a first hand account of the road conditions?

No first hand account but I cancelled a scheduled trip to Edmonton today just to be on the safe side. Damn customers in Edmonton will just have to wait to get their Christmas presents until the new year.

Ugh. You're going to be white knuckled all the way there. And then you're going to arrive just in time for rush hour. Have fun, bro.

Also be sure you have enough survival gear to last 24 hours with no assistance. Hwy 2 isn't that bad, but there are still spots where you could go off the road and nobody notice.

So have the obvious boots, gloves, scarf, touque, and layers of clothes to put on. (including extra pants and socks)

I also put my ski goggles in the car for the winter in case I need to venture out.

And of course have food, water, a blanket, and a few candles. You'd be surprised how much a candle in a closed car will take that excess chill out of the air.

AMA Site shows "yellow" road conditions (compared with last night showing as "red").

Figure it won't be best driving conditions, but have the snow tires on and have all-wheel drive. Just hoping a fellow CP'er might have driven through there recently.

My office faces highway 2 in Red Deer. Looking out the window, traffic seems to be flowing at normal speed. Compared to yesterday where traffic was stopped either in the North or Southbound lane pretty much all day. At one time traffic was at a standstill heading both directions.

Do you work somwhere in Edgar? I'm on the other side of the highway except my window faces opposite highway 2 and gives a nice view of Les's Trailer Court.

Hold on, I don't get it. You are going to Edmonton when you could stay in Calgary?

Les's Trailer Court. That could be interesting from time to time.

As i've noticed lately though, just because the roads are fine doesn't mean the other drivers are fine on them

I am going that way tomorrow at lunch. According to AMA and weathernetwork road condition maps it doesnt seem terrible.

The worst part of the drive for me is right after that Esso on HWY 2 past Airdrie there is that curve, then grain elevator on the West then the hills, where they repaved after the hills I found to be crazy slippery, at least last winter.

At Crossfield. The wind will blow snow across the highway there making it very slippery at times.

I am close to cancelling a trip to Calgary from Edmonton tomorrow. If you do make it here, let us know how the drive was. Good luck.

I did the trip earlier this week. It's fine, not the best, just fine. It's normal winter driving conditions. You'll start seeing some icy spots near Bowden then it'll clear up, then again around Red Deer. Traffic still flows at 120km/hr, just keep your distance when the icy patches start showing up and you'll be fine.

Weathernetwork.com always has a highway road condition monitor. It shows slippery all the way from Calgary to Edmonton but a small patch of clear road just before Red Deer. No sections heavily snowed.
