The best part about the second one is that it shows the idea behind the north star...it's the one that doesn't move and everything else rotates around it.

I learned that last summer when my brother was taking some hour+ exposure shots of the stars.

I can't find the N star or the dipper in the images. Where is it in relation (O'clock) to the tip of the house?

The big dipper would be behind the house maybe below the horizon I think, how far south is this? Not used to seeing the north star so low in the sky

Thanks. Yeah, that was my prime suspect.

It was the lack of illumination that had me doubting. Probably getting the most of the light pollution.

That and the timed exposure means a lot more stars are visible, where usually with the naked eye there isn't that many stars visible so seeing the pattern is much more difficult, add into that that most of the little dipper's stars aren't that bright.
