5 Government Programs that Backfired
Prohibition was 5th so you know the others are bad!
Hard to argue too much with the selections but I personally would have added a few Soviet Union Brain cramps at 2 and 3. Can't kill 10 million of your own people and get a pass.

Could have been number 1 for the invention of NASCAR alone.

I wonder what Canada's bottom five would be?
The NEP
The Gun Registry
Conscription crisis
GST
Cancelling the Avro Arrow?
Building of the CPR and the Pacific Scandal?

don't know how you could criticize the CPR now....wouldnt have much of a country west of Winnipeg without it.
I'd add the ADScam in there as well.

yeah, on reading this again, I'd have to say the listing of WW1 was a mistake as well.

Why?
When you have to fight a second war because you so terriblly botched the first, I would call that bad policy IMO.

They didn't know that at the time!
It was supposed to be a field trip and a party.
Most young men signed up as 15 year olds and probably drunk

Believe it or not I know an engineer who of course is a staunch Liberal who I frequently argue with about the "success" of the NEP.
He thinks it was a remarkably successful program. He's about 50 and lived in Ottawa at the time so of course he was benefiting while people in this province got screwed royally.

You can add Japanese internment during WWII to that list.

Technical point, but it wasn't WWI that was botched so much as the aftermath. The Allied powers were far to interested in sticking it to Germany.
Though lets face it, wars have little to do with bad policy most times, and more to do with human nature.

It did exactly what it was designed to do. For this reason it would be tough to say it "backfired". It screwed over Alberta completely but that's what they wanted in order to save the east and buy support.
